Plate-fin and tube heat exchangers are extensively used in air conditioning and the petro-chemical industries. Previous studies were mainly purely experimental and case-specific. In this chapter, fluid flow and conjugate heat transfer in a typical representative duct in a plate-fin and tube heat exchanger are investigated.

The characteristics of the gas–liquid interfacial area (a) and the true liquid-side (kL) and volumetric (kLa) mass transfer coefficients were investigated in the riser of a three-phase circulating fluidized bed (TPCFB). The values of kLa and a were determined from the simultaneous physical desorption of O2 and chemical absorption of CO2 into the liquid phase

Fick's second law of diffusion was solved using the Laplace transformation for a homogeneous linear sample and a bisectional linear sample, for the boundary conditions of one end of the sample being impressed with a sinusoidal excitation of concentration or of mass flow, and the other end being a reflective or an infinitive boundary.

This paper is the first part of a series of two papers on the development of a general thermodynamic basis for the study of transport phenomena in a porous medium composed of a multi-component fluid flowing through a porous rock skeleton. Fluid components are miscible and homogenous thermodynamic interactions among them take place at the molecular level.
