Technology Makes Reading Better. Here's Exactly How. - Te@chThought

Technology Makes Reading Better. Here's Exactly How. - Te@chThought | FELA & IDEC | Scoop.it

"Reading is just the communication of ideas through alphanumeric symbols. I’m not sure what this represents such hallowed ground for teachers, but it does. Personally I’d be more concerned with reading habits, reasons for reading, the quality of reading materials, etc. Symbols change, forms change, media change. See the gif animations that demonstrate how a student feels when “bae won’t respond to them.” This is your audience, and these are the symbols they gravitate towards.

In the apps-for-close-reading post, I said that this “interaction” between reader and text during close reading “doesn’t require technology, but can be changed by it.” So it made sense, I thought, to guess at some ways this happens. Or should be happening, anyway.

With more personalization, more access, and more connectivity, we should be creating a generation of close-readers that can’t get enough. So if we’re not, the question is, why isn’t that happening? The pieces are there."

"While gathering resources to share with campus teachers, I stumbled upon thePhoto Mapo app and quickly added it to my list of tools for summer archival. The intent was to provide a repository of tools and applications that educators could utilize in the midst of their staycations and vacations that could also be extended to the classroom. Photo Mapo is a FREE app that does just that. Just downloaded and checked it out. So easy to use. Choose a photo and that's it! (GPS data with photo, of course.) Lots of templates to choose from.

Kim Flintoff's curator insight, June 9, 11:42 PM

Very useful for fieldtrips and site -based learning activities - the app allows you to record the location, a map, a photo and notes about the location in a single "postcard" style image.  Geological survey, environmental outings, etc could all be recorded with this innovative, yet very simple application.

How to Create a Bibliography in Google Documents | FELA & IDEC | Scoop.it

Chris Eller's curator insight, April 29, 5:17 PM

As a fan of Google Docs, I am still frustrated at its lack of features...such as creating a bibliography. All of the tools available (Papers, Sente, etc.) integrate well with Microsoft Word. Not so with Google Docs. Perhaps we are turning a corner with the addition of add-ons like EasyBib. Still a long ways from the powerful integration of Papers and Word.

There are many studies of how user expectations of institutional IT are changing: see for example the recent Educause review of IT issues and regular surveys from UCISA. A New Fantastic Bloom's Taxonomy Wheel for iPad Apps ~ Educational Technology and Mobile Learning | FELA & IDEC | Scoop.it

"Today while I was browsing through my Twitter feeds I came across this fabulous Bloom's Taxonomy wheel of apps shared by Anthony. If you still recall, some previous versions of this wheel have already been featured here in Bloom's Taxonomy for Teachers section .

As you can see, the wheel outlines a wide variety of verbs and activities related to each thinking level of Blooms taxonomy coupled with iPad apps that go with it. These apps are supposed to help teachers and students better cultivate these different thinking levels in their use of iPad apps. And because the the visual is not hyperlinked, I went ahead and provided the links for each of these apps in the lists below. Enjoy"

Exploring Curation as a Core Competency in Digital and Media Literacy Education, Journal of Interactive Media in Education, 2013 | FELA & IDEC | Scoop.it
In today's hypermedia landscape, youth and young adults are increasingly using social media platforms, online aggregators and mobile applications for daily information use.

...

In this paper we explore the concept of curation as a student- and creation-driven pedagogical tool to enhance digital and media literacy education. We present a theoretical justification for curation and present six key ways that curation can be used to teach about critical thinking, analysis and expression online. We utilize a case study of the digital curation platform Storify to explore how curation works in the classroom, and present a framework that integrates curation pedagogy into core media literacy education learning outcomes.

The future of learning - Sugata Mitra

The future of learning - Sugata Mitra | FELA & IDEC | Scoop.it

In this talk, Sugata Mitra will take us through the origins of schooling as we know it, to the dematerialisation of institutions as we know them. Thirteen years of experiments in children's education takes us through a series of startling results – children can self-organise their own learning, they can achieve educational objectives on their own, they can read by themselves. Finally, the most startling of them all: groups of children with access to the internet can learn anything by themselves. From the slums of India, to the villages of India and Cambodia, to poor schools in Chile, Argentina, Uruguay, the USA and Italy, to the schools of Gateshead and the rich international schools of Washington and Hong Kong, Sugata's experimental results show a strange new future for learning.

How to Infuse Digital Literacy Throughout the Curriculum

How to Infuse Digital Literacy Throughout the Curriculum | FELA & IDEC | Scoop.it

In our emerging digital world, a new medium of exchange has developed: online engagement, especially via social media. Effectively engaging online requires a myriad of skills that we strive to foster in school – effective written communication, brevity and civility. These components are often highlighted in Digital Citizenship programs, but in tradition-bound K12 education, we often deride social media as trite or ineffective.

Many students still do not understand the limitations of finding information on the free web. Google is about the extent of it and if it isn't found in the first few results, it does not exist or is too hard to find (or worse still, what is found must be "it.").

From article: "We need to ensure that they know how to evaluate a website, a blog post, a tweet, a Facebook entry. These evaluative skills transfer cross curricularly and prepare students for the broader world of online communication."

The Stages of Personalized Learning Environments (PLE) needed to be updated again. Why? Because of the considerable feedback we received from participants in our 5 W's of Personalized Learning eCourse about our first and second versions of the chart. Some of the feedback was about consistency and flow across the stages. What worked in what stage? We definitely want to thank those that critiqued the stages for us and helped us with this version three that we hope will be the final version.-
