Background & Research | The Good Pitch

There has been a lot of debate about pitching of late. So much so that the IPA and ISBA decided to collectively look at the matter in detail and find out what its members were thinking.

We conducted research amongst clients and agencies to determine current practices and attitudes to pitching and importantly to establish the real costs of pitching. The results about pitch costs were alarming, for many reasons, not least the discrepancy between what clients and agencies actual think pitching costs.

To give you some idea, clients perceive agency pitch costs to be in the region of £31k for a large pitch. However the reality is that it actually costs agencies more like £178K (approx 99 man days).

What also emerged was that pitches are increasingly becoming longer, more inefficient and more expensive than ever before. Little has fundamentally changed with the pitching model in a business that has changed dramatically.

However the research also revealed that 58% of clients recognise the need for a new type of pitch process and further investigation by ISBA established a core of visionary clients already experimenting with different pitch approaches.

Therefore we formed a task force which consisted of senior marketers, agency CEO’s and chaired by Mark Lund (former CEO of COI) to gain a collective view of how we could help improve the current landscape by creating some guidelines for new ways of pitching.
The taskforce came up with the 6 Pitch Principles that this site is founded on the 6 principles.

Fuego's Curation: New mobile tool to follow the future of journalism, anywhere

Fuego's Curation: New mobile tool to follow the future of journalism, anywhere | Feed | Scoop.it

Lots of smart people are always discussing the future of journalism and media on Twitter—but knowing which of those conversations are most important at any given time can mean spending your whole day on Twitter.

To help solve this problem, today the Nieman Journalism Lab debuted a mobile-friendly version of its Fuego tool…

According to Nieman Lab director Joshua Benton, Fuego for Mobile is a “heat-seeking Twitter bot, our tool that amalgamates the best and most interesting stories the future-of-journalism crowd is talking about on Twitter and presents them to you for quick reading.”
On a mobile phone, the result looks a little bit like Storify, the popular social media content curation tool. But there are some key differences:

- Fuego displays a running list of the current most popular or important Twitter conversations about the future of news (rather than tracking the progress of a single story).
- Fuego’s curation is done algorithmically, rather than manually—which requires far less work than Storify or manual retweeting....

Guardian to Readers: Here's Our Upcoming Story List | Mashable | Feed | Scoop.it

UK newspaper The Guardian is making its schedule of upcoming stories available to the public in a two-week experiment, in an effort to elevate transparency in the newsroom. The paper is inviting readers to contribute by contacting the reporters assigned to each story.

The paper has embedded three Google Docs spreadsheets listing stories in progress over on its live blog. The assigned reporter’s name and a link to his or her Twitter handle is listed alongside a short description of each story.

Not all stories are included on the list, of course; exclusives and embargoed content is kept private to protect both sources and the paper from competitors....

And here's a real expert opinion on Silk...and why Google may not be its biggest fan!

'Amazon’s browser apparently does more than caching, speeding, and munging Web pages. For example, what happens to Google ads and services? Today, on my PC, Google knows it’s me using its services. Tomorrow, from a Fire, I assume they’ll get an AWS request without further user info. That’s the ‘‘threatening to Google” part mentioned above, Google could find itself providing free services without getting much of anything in return'
