Job Search:14 Tips For Staying Calm During An Interview - Forbes

Job Search:14 Tips For Staying Calm During An Interview - Forbes | FE-ADULT elearning | Scoop.it

"You’re in the hot seat. Your palms are sweaty; voice is shaky; face is flushed; and mouth is dry. Maybe you’re bouncing your knees and talking too fast."

"Perhaps your heart is racing or your stomach is turning. You’re nervous."

"Why does this happen to so many job candidates?"

“When we perceive that we are in a high stakes situation, the brain doesn’t distinguish the high stakes of a job interview–where it would help to be calm, cool and collected–from the high stakes of being under threat from attack (say, from a tiger),” says Dr. Tamar Chansky, author of Freeing Yourself from Anxiety.

"Plenty of job candidates get nervous in the hot seat--but you'll want to try your hardest to remain cool, calm and collected. Here are 14 ways to do that." by Jacquelyn Smith - Forbes

You have already seen most of the 14 ways to stay calm by Dr. Tamar Chansky in your own research around the job hunt. Such as the first 5, Be Prepared, Plan, Rehearse, Eliminate the Unknown and Arrive Early.

The twist behind the article is Dr Chansky is helping us understand many of the normal ways our brains are wired for "Flight" or "Fight".

Knowing this is where most of the anxiety is coming from helps figure out how to deal with an upcoming interview as well as what to do the day of and during the interview to stay "calmer".

However, as a friend of mine says: "If you ever find yourself sitting back in the chair, it is time to get nervous." So don't be too relaxed during a job interview or the job search. Our body language is much more powerful in speaking than our own words. Both to ourselves as well as the hiring manager.

Excellent tips!!!

I particularly agree that the more you prepare the more confident and less negative stress you will experience.  Also, avoiding caffeeine (coffee, cola, tea) is always suggested.  I tell everyone that caffeine magnifies and amplifies the jitters.

Rehearsing the ice breaker first questions really helps to build confidence and momentum.

After the read the article do you have any other suggestions that you could share with everyone?  would love to hear from you.

I agree that most of the interview question goals are to find out:

1.  Can you do the job/are you within our salary range

2.  Are you professional

3.  Are you are the right for the department and organizational culture

After you read the article, do you have other interview questions you wondered why that question was asked?

If so, we would love to hear from you!

---If you have any questions, comments, or best practices about careers or leadership…I am on it!  My goal is to share thoughts, tools, and inspriation to help you leverage your strengths, and help you achieve your goals!  I am grateful and so fortuante to travel the world as a speaker and coach.  I get to work with some of the best in class organizations, and I love to pass along lessons I learn from you to others.

Until next time....PS - Live on Purpose!

It is interesting to see the same trends over and over again.  These maps are a great tool to show the history of the area, as well as the history of religion and political views.  I appreciate the information provided since the Middle East has undergone the most transitions (going all the way back to Mesopotamia) and its history can be confusing.

Alex Vielman's curator insight, November 23, 2015 3:17 PM

Maps like the ones posted in this article, really helps people to understand and break down deeply of understanding the entire region as a whole. Visualization is very important in geography when trying to understand the region people are talking about. this region as goes down to the Mesopotamia Era. It is important to know, how the culture was in this area to how it differentiated during the Ottoman Empire. During the first couple of maps, we can begin to see the division of the entire region. As you go on, we begin to notice the divisions between people, religion, language between states and in-states. There is so much information to know about the Middle East region and it may be even harder to understand due to the tons of changes and separations, but it is important to understand these divisions like the Sunni's and the Shi'ites in order to fully explain the development and the current situations that are occurring in this region as we speak.

Matt Ramsdell's curator insight, December 7, 2015 5:18 PM

These 40 maps are a very interesting way of showing how people have traveled around and moved about the Earth from the time of the fertile crescent era to the people of today. It shows us the paths that people have taken to move to a new location. How they used the Meditteranean Sea to move from one side to the other. It also shows how the Tigris and Euphrates came together to form a smaller area of the Persian gulf. This led to smalled economic growth because now there is less land for imports and exports.

We love Google docs. In fact, the seamless collaboration in text documents and spreadsheets is one of the things that inspired us to build the same sort of collaboration into Coggle, right from the start, and the frustration of working collaboratively on text documents is partly why Coggles have the branching structure they do – which makes it much simpler to collaborate.

I love the advice in this article about being the best PR and Marketing person for YOU!

So many remarkable people with wonderful talent are humble about their accomplishments and their worth to a company.  I have to pull out for them what makes them special, how incredible their accomplishments are, and why the company would select them over other candidates.

There is a careful balance of confidence partnered with likeability with a splash of humility.  You need to believe that you are the best candidate for the job...ask yourself will anyone work harder, be as passionate, and be a teamplayer as much as you?

I didn't think so!  Please let me know if you have any questions that I could help with.
