I love the Learning Taxonomy pie chart and I love the chart from The Right Question Institute. Good librarians have known for years (forever?) that the right question can mean the difference between helping and frustrating a patron - let's make sure students know how to focus their questions, too! Here are some examples: Turn quotes into an interesting slideshow, post an event announcement on a pretty picture, place stats onto eye-catching graphs, give a blog post title some pizzaz, create an infographic about the history of your biz, create a catchy, custom featured image for a video, etc. The possibilities are endless.

When I originally pondered this question, I began to realize that the 5 C's often discussed in education today - communication, collaboration, creativity, critical thinking, and citizenship - needed to be expanded to include these other areas as well: curation, copyright, character and connectedness."

The Question Game: A Playful Way To Teach Critical Thinking

The Question Game: A Playful Way To Teach Critical Thinking | Pedagogy | Scoop.it

"Big idea: Teaching kids to ask smart questions on their own

A four-year-old asks on average about 400 questions per day, and an adult hardly asks any. Our school system is structured around rewards for regurgitating the right answer, and not asking smart questions – in fact, it discourages asking questions. With the result that as we grow older, we stop asking questions. Yet asking good questions is essential to find and develop solutions, and an important skill in innovation, strategy, and leadership. So why do we stop asking questions – and more importantly, why don’t we train each other, and our future leaders, to ask the right questions starting from early on?"

Kym Reinstadler, SCN Feature Writer's curator insight, February 8, 10:18 PM

A four-year-old asks, on average, 400 questions a day. By the time he or she reaches adulthood, they will ask very few per day. Speaking as someone who’s probably never going to grow up, allow me to emphasize that:

  • Why questions help to find the root of a problem
  • What If questions open up the floor for creative solutions
  • How questions focus on developing practical solutions
Arizona State University, Claire McLaughlin's curator insight, February 9, 11:11 AM

Anything that gives students a chance to ask their own questions is a good idea in my opinion.  When the questions invoke critical thinking, it's a double bonus!  Also, writing these questions on any pre-made box would work.  No need to be crafty with scissors and tape.

Simon Awuyo's curator insight, February 11, 2:04 PM

Critical Digital Literacy Explained for Teachers

Critical Digital Literacy Explained for Teachers | Pedagogy | Scoop.it

Critical digital literacy is one of the essential required competencies for the 21st century educator. In an era of unprecedented personal publishing, infobesity (information obesity) becomes a real issue. Teachers need to be able to critically  assess and evaluate the materials and knowledge they come across. This could be done through adopting a critical thinking lens to filter things that could otherwise unconsciously affect one's stance and interpretation of  a given meaning.

Juliet Hinrichsen and Antony Coombs from University of Greenwich developed this excellent framework to help you understand the concept of critical digital literacy. This framework is made up of 5 dimensions:

This topic is crucial for all educators. "Teachers need to be able to critically  assess and evaluate the materials and knowledge they come across." And it doesn't matter where the materials are published. Can't agree more...

Dr. Dea Conrad-Curry's curator insight, December 12, 2014 12:14 PM

About five years ago, I worked with a large suburban school on developing awareness and teaching/learning skill sets in the area of critical literacy. The nuances of digital and even print text within structure and conventions suggests meaning that extends far beyond the alphabetic word. This framework would have been a helpful tool to ground discussion and build understanding.
