Generation X’s journey from jaded to sated

Generation X’s journey from jaded to sated | Culture Gulcher | Scoop.it
Boomers cry "More, more, more!" and Millennials whine “Me, me, me!” But Gen Xers know when to say "Meh"
Christopher Lock's insight:

Overall I despise this sort of "branding" of an entire generation (my own).  The Boomers defined themselves and everyone else compulsively, "Ohhhhh, you're The Greatestg Generation, 'cause you're our grandparents, and you kids are "Gen X", cause you so mysterious and resent our boxes... and our children are Gen Y..." That said, like astrology or "social observations" I tend to read puff like this in books and articles a bit compulsively myself (soo Gen X of me.  Consuming Boomer/Millenial product while ironically despising it).

I don't know if I despise this article (on first reading, I despised it) so much as despise its accurate depiction of my peers (and me, a bit). Most of my friends are nearly a decade younger, since my age-same bretheren seemed too quick to slip into a boring job and settle.  Now that even these youths are settling, I'm finding more and more to admire with the even-younger Millenials.  They seem smarter, more Liberal (thank God!), and still ambitiously full of hope, even in their deminished environment.  I predict they will soon reach an inevitable anger over the bullshit world they're being handed, so many messes to fix, so little help by their elders.  But I think their instinctive Liberal attitude, being so much better than my Gen X sluggishness, will point us in the right direction.

Go Mellenials, you're awesome, and many of us Gen X-ers notice this!  Save us from our "meh"!

What Makes Us Human?: Chomsky, Locke & Marx Introduced by New Animated Videos from the BBC | Culture Gulcher | Scoop.it
When Plato defined humans as two-legged animals without feathers, I suspect he was only half serious. Or if he was as humorless as some suppose, his antagonist Diogenes the Cynic certainly picked up on the joke, pointing out that the description sounds pretty much like a plucked chicken.

When “Life Hacking” Is Really White Privilege — Get Bullish — Medium | Culture Gulcher | Scoop.it
The line at the post office was 18 people deep.

I’d been waiting awhile, and was thinking about something I’d read: that in Europe, public…
Christopher Lock's insight:

The writer makes a good point: much of this "I just took the initiative and made it happen" jingoism only works if you're white... and often only if you're male... and "look professional" (in other words -- have some money to buy the right clothing, shoes...), and probably look good enough, 'cause ugly people with money can fix that quick enough.  I think of someone like Mitt Romeny, who my grandfather was friends with his father and I'm sure is truly a decent person inside -- which made hm more dangerous than a canniving evil scoundrel: he had no idea how privilidged he was.  I think that's what the article gets at.  Putting universal expectations and having no big problem with the status quo because the universe is rigged quietly in their favor -- and they either deny it or have no clue whatsoever, either case being rather convenient for them.
