PR, Access and tech are NOT enough to make BAD fashion ideas take off #SocialCommerce #FashionTech #Stratup #Funding | Fashion Technology Designers & Startups | Scoop.it

Fashion finance: Start-up funding proceeds with fits and starts - FT.com
"Despite a recent explosion in third-party capital for starry fashion eventures, from the $44m garnered by Far Fetch this March to the $229m raised by Gilt Groupe over five funding rounds, a recipe for success remains elusive.

Bonnie Sandy's insight:

I have to prepare a Funding  101 for Indie designers... there are 3 core

debt based
equity based

peer to peer - Crowdfunding  Pretail and traditional models.

Many indie designers who actually know the fashion sector are pushed towards debt based funding  rather than equity when they attend business training  courses. Those that know business and tech  access equity based funding. The challenge is they  do NOT understand fashion.

I cringe when I see how many have failed and the amount of money that literally goes down the drain. I'm not surprised few really have any real Fashion  knowledge... and by that I mean successfully supplyng the fashion needs of women. What women (and to a lesser extent  men)  want have not changed. Great fitting beautiful items that make them stand out! it's simple, uncomplicated, seems easy, So why do fashion tech companies fail... There is a lot of opportunity in FashionTech if only they can literally get it together

In the next few scoops I'll highlight some new fashion tech  companies that promise the answer... and I'll try not to comment.

Now these sites are approaching  designers  with offers of crowd funding and no real idea of what they are  doing. My advise to designers, BEWARE, get an advisor and think things through.

I will be discussing these and other options options early next  year with designer in the virtual support  program I run  for designer.  www.bonniesandy.com

Design-your-own dress site puts bridesmaids in control - Springwise

Design-your-own dress site puts bridesmaids in control - Springwise | Fashion Technology Designers & Startups | Scoop.it
The design-your-own trend is one we've seen brought to countless product categories already, including — on several occasions — dresses. What's interesting about New York-based Coco Myles is that it brings the concept to bridesmaid dresses, allowing the bride to choose the colour scheme while the bridesmaids design their own styles.

Consumers can create a variety of types of dresses at Coco Myles, including those intended for special events such as weddings and proms. All dresses are custom-made to the customer's specifications and then cut and sewn by hand by a team of professional dressmakers. That's all well and good, but the company really caught our eye for its special services for brides and bridesmaids. Specifically, brides can use the site's tailored interface to choose the color and other features of their bridesmaids' attire while permitting the wearers to choose a style that is right for their own tastes, body type and comfort. Available in sizes 0 through 32 — including maternity designs — Coco Myles' custom made-to-order dresses take only about five weeks to produce and cost approximately USD 150. A Bridal Fabric Reservation System even lets brides make sure that their bridesmaids' dresses are all cut from the same bolt, no matter when they get ordered.

There's no doubt letting consumers design their own dresses is a smart move, but targeting the niche of bridesmaids' dresses is particularly smart. It's a rare dress indeed that can please every wearer, so putting the bulk of the design decisions in the hands of the bridesmaids themselves is bound to make for happier bridesmaids — and happier brides.

Crowd-curated fashion site features items hand-picked by users - Springwise

Crowd-curated fashion site features items hand-picked by users - Springwise | Fashion Technology Designers & Startups | Scoop.it
Much the way social discovery site StumbleUpon lets users “thumbs-up” and share the pages they like on the web, so Fashiolista encourages something similar for fashion items.

Netherlands-based Fashiolista displays numerous items that have been hand-picked and submitted by regular users using a special “love” button. A million items are “loved” by users in that way on the free site each month, according to a report on VentureBeat, amounting to what's essentially a community-curated fashion selection. With users in more than 100 countries, Fashiolista also lets regular users follow each others' votes for a constantly updated dose of inspiration. An iPhone app is available as well from the site, which recently drew a USD 500,000 seed investment from Skype cofounder Niklas Zennström.

Advertising and affiliate fees are at the heart of Fashiolista's business model; premium accounts, contest sponsorships and specially featured items are all among the site's opportunities for participating businesses.
