Customers are willing to share their data in exchange for transparency and better experiences.
Bonnie Sandy's insight:

The indie sector and expecially  across cultural lines this is a tricky one to  navigate. Consumers need to understand that  retailers need info to better serve you and as a retailer or service provider, "need" can  make one vulnerable and tranparency  could be misinterpreted.

Average Facebook Page Reaches 12.6% But how many actually sell #Socialcommerce #fashiontech | Fashion Technology Designers & Startups | Scoop.it
TweetFacebook doesn’t often reveal baseline statistics for their platform. The typical number floating around regarding Reach is about 16%.
Bonnie Sandy's insight:

"how are you selling"-  One of  the small creative  companies I  work with report 20-30% increase in sales each  quarter and I expect that to triple this Holiday  season, all from  his Social media strategy. Indie Creative busiensses that  do not have a specific physical addres have unique challenges, They may have one style in various colors or 100 completely  unique style. Our Goal is conversion. Reach and conversion confuses many ... some esperts place FaceBook place reach  at  a little over  3%  yet for many  FB is their ONLY marketing post. www.Demarketplace.com is designed to maximize teh  Impact  By using  a mixture of Curation, Social recommendations Collaborative and Integrated marketing strategies maximized for mobile and other digital distribution platforms. The focus is  Conversion and that means something  completly different.

This ad from Indian jeweler Tanishq may seem perfectly normal to a non-Indian audience, but it's quite controversial in India for its unorthodox wedding.

Simple Sweatshirt Is Crowdfunding Site’s Biggest Fashion Success - BoF - The Business of Fashion

Simple Sweatshirt Is Crowdfunding Site’s Biggest Fashion Success - BoF - The Business of Fashion | Fashion Technology Designers & Startups | Scoop.it

“Typically when you want to start a business you might spend months or years, even, working on the business plan, copyrighting or patenting various parts and pieces, attempting to line up suppliers, trying to raise the money to make the minimums required to get production going. Only after all of that can you take it to market and try to sell your first customer,” Bronstein told BoF.

Bonnie Sandy's insight:

It's usually  easier to sell printed apparel and sweatshirt tee shirt styles, and when there is a great story or brand these normally do well with crowdfunding...

PR, Access and tech are NOT enough to make BAD fashion ideas take off #SocialCommerce #FashionTech #Stratup #Funding | Fashion Technology Designers & Startups | Scoop.it

Fashion finance: Start-up funding proceeds with fits and starts - FT.com
"Despite a recent explosion in third-party capital for starry fashion eventures, from the $44m garnered by Far Fetch this March to the $229m raised by Gilt Groupe over five funding rounds, a recipe for success remains elusive.

Bonnie Sandy's insight:

I have to prepare a Funding  101 for Indie designers... there are 3 core

debt based
equity based

peer to peer - Crowdfunding  Pretail and traditional models.

Many indie designers who actually know the fashion sector are pushed towards debt based funding  rather than equity when they attend business training  courses. Those that know business and tech  access equity based funding. The challenge is they  do NOT understand fashion.

I cringe when I see how many have failed and the amount of money that literally goes down the drain. I'm not surprised few really have any real Fashion  knowledge... and by that I mean successfully supplyng the fashion needs of women. What women (and to a lesser extent  men)  want have not changed. Great fitting beautiful items that make them stand out! it's simple, uncomplicated, seems easy, So why do fashion tech companies fail... There is a lot of opportunity in FashionTech if only they can literally get it together

In the next few scoops I'll highlight some new fashion tech  companies that promise the answer... and I'll try not to comment.

Now these sites are approaching  designers  with offers of crowd funding and no real idea of what they are  doing. My advise to designers, BEWARE, get an advisor and think things through.

I will be discussing these and other options options early next  year with designer in the virtual support  program I run  for designer.  www.bonniesandy.com

Inside the Designer Bridal Boom - BoF - The Business of Fashion

"In the US, the overall wedding market was worth $48 billion in 2012, according to a July 2013 report released by New York-based market research firm We Connect Fashion, with an average of 16 percent of individual wedding budgets spent on women’s dresses. This puts the value of the market for wedding gowns, in America alone, at roughly $7.7 billion per year."

It's not Just the bride's dress, Every attendant, every guests needs to be dressed and few want  to take teh risk of wearing  what someone else is... one wedding a month  can catapult the local indie designer into a six figure income! create a label that's well thought out and orgaized....

In launching  www.Demarketplace.com a marketing  initiative it is necessary that these great products are  well packaged.  So we’ll be sending out a guide that  will help them better package their products, services and merchandise for holiday sale.  Not just gift  giving (Hostess, office, corporate gifts) but  the consumer's need to

Bonnie Sandy's insight:

I  am gifting my digital marketing skills to  colleagues this holiday season, to supplement or augment their own efforts. I usually  do a product , website and strategy review before taking on any paid marketing.  I offer several layers of help develop a business marketing and/or revenue strategy that take anywhere from 28 hrs to 52 session over a long period of time and several Plans. There is not the time for a full remedial treatment.

I'm spending  today  pulling together a quick  guide, to creatives on packaging their "product, services and merchandise' for holiday gift giving. Now   push for the mid November- End of December season, that accounts for 40-50% of the income of retailers should have started. So this is more of a quick  fix approach! #Gentrification was the reason given for 4w's demise what was it @3rdWardbrooklyn #Brooklyn #Incubator Closings | Fashion Technology Designers & Startups | Scoop.it
Blessed Are the Makers: The Rise and Fall of 3rd Ward...
The sudden collapse last week of art center and studio/co-working space 3rd Ward unceremoniously revealed the incompetence with which the company was managed and its frighteningly anemic cash flows...
Bonnie Sandy's insight:

The social streams lit up recently with the  dramatics of 3rd Ward's closing -  I 'm waiting  for the  movie... this stuff is fascinating.
FYI 3rd Ward brooklyn (see links to articles below) was not the first  incubator space in Brooklyn. 4W Circle of Arts and Enterprise celebrated 17 years when  3rd ward was starting.

artist have always known  something was wrong at 3rd ward I remembered the  early  complaints.

... many  chose the fame, glam, press and presence that this "gave' rather than  working out their issues and building their businesses. My heart goes out to those displaced especially  at this time  ... but part of  success is making  judgement calls . it is interesting to read the articles and comments and wonder how will the new 'incubator" spaces Inspired by the 3rd Ward story  do. to ensure their success.

A creative space is Unique running it  and making  decisions for one takes a unique skillset and experience

With 4w they blamed gentrification.

With 3rd ward... what would they  say.

I came in to 4W revised  it's incubator and added creative entrepreneurial classes sales shot up and many had their best  Holiday season. However  recommendations for funding the space were not accepted by management.

A space has cost and that has to be addressed. individuals running a space  work hard and need to be paid. ( I could only afford to volunteer my  expertise for about 7 months and continued working with  individuals long after the doors shot)  So I find the comments about  the  cost of his home home worrysome and indicative of the creative mentality that creative expertise is less valuable than that of a lawyer or  accountant.

So what shut the doors many on the  outside were also shocked that 4W closed it's doors. an Incubator is a busienss Creative spaces need to break even  at the least and they can... I've since worked with individuals here and abroad on  programs that successfully help creatives. Space changes teh numbers and I refuse to spend more than X dollars a square foot... an incubator will work where there is no middle man situation to  double/tripple cost. which is why artist communities  are usually (started) in  deserted outpost.

However  while space helps It is the changes, that artist make to their businesses and revenue model they institute, that  matters to creatives success. No  business should be in a space like this more than 3 years. There are many questions to be answered.

Funding Site to Designers: Leave the Business End to Us

Funding Site to Designers: Leave the Business End to Us | Fashion Technology Designers & Startups | Scoop.it

Byco, a new microfinancing site, combines old-fashioned capitalism with crowd-funding principles....

Here’s how Byco works. A designer submits a design, say, for a dress, using an original sketch or flats that Byco provides for guidance. Mr. Finkelstein then calculates the cost of sampling and, once any changes are agreed upon, posts the sample to Byco’s invest page. Investors then pay for the sample, Mr. Finkelstein manufactures it, and the item is offered for sale on Byco for about a month. The designer owns the sample, as well as any copyright, and is encouraged to promote the garment on Facebook and other platforms.

“We’re trying to let designers be designers,” Mr. Finkelstein said.

We offer more than the Funding itself…

We can offer you special prices at third party solution services (like promotion, cd printing etc). Unlike most other platforms we do not get a kickback from these companies, instead we pass the kickback directly on to you by negotiating a better deal! We can also offer you low price fulfilment services for printing and sending out your CDs or other stuff after a successful funding worldwide! Check out our partners. We even offer you a complete and easy revenue share system in case you want to offer this as an incentive to your Believers.

Bonnie Sandy's insight:

Every Tom Dick and Harry is promising designers to  crowdfund and desperate designers are signing up! Cameesa was one of the first fashion crowdfunding  Platform..,  I first met via Mashables http://mashable.com/2008/07/09/cameesa/  they are now defunct

and later Catwalk Genius which I  found via springwise http://catwalkgenius.com/ they shut down in 2011

Designers have tried  Idie Gog and kickstarter now A new batch of crowdfunding  startups i spromising designers to  "help the" at GREAT  cost... I  cannot  give my endorsment... so who is looking atthe designers rights and risk... I'm still investigating (most of the logic I've thus far been given seems to target  t shirt companies) and I  wil write a detail post later... for now it's about getting designers selling stock. 40-60% of their income comes via holiday sales! if you have questions contact me http://www.bonniesandy.com/contact-us/

Some use the term "residuals", for items sold... no clarity on who owns what... so much  confusion even I am condused!
