Mr Beam Arduino Powered Portable Laser Cutter and Engraver DIY kit Makes Tech Available to the Masses

Mr Beam Arduino Powered Portable Laser Cutter and Engraver DIY kit Makes Tech Available to the Masses | Fashion Technology Designers & Startups | Scoop.it
Not quite at the level of 3D printers Mr BEAM an open source , portable, DIY laser cutter and engraver kit for paper, wood, plastic and other materials . This is significant because it places laser cutters in thesame position 3D printers were circa 2009/10. to date this Kickstarter it is fully funded with 28 days left. In our image the bag handle is 3D cut with the wooden buttons above it engraved... done at parsons during Fashioncamp 2010. Hopefully in 2-3 years fully fuctioning pre-assembled laser cutters will be available to creative and other consumers... While there are a number of patterns available on  site like THINGIVERSE some may want to  beef up their Cad design skills.
Bonnie Sandy's insight:

Beef up on your  digital design skills in prep for your own laser cutter #fashiontech is definitely changing  the home design studio!

It's a Wrap - Rethinking The supply chain as a #Fashiontech solution

It's a Wrap - Rethinking The supply chain as a #Fashiontech solution | Fashion Technology Designers & Startups | Scoop.it

It's rare I get excited by my own work but I literally jumped for joy when I saw these mock ups for the new sandals I'm designing!  I cannot wait to get these into the hands of my style mavens, shoot the instruction manual and start taking orders!

Bonnie Sandy's insight:

Design, styling an merchandise options, logistics and revenue models but first- You cannot sell what you  cannot  supply - and even then your supply chain can run you out of busienss. Even FAB  has to deal with supply chain issues and the cost.  Etsy's approach of passing that onto teh  iniviual crafter may make their numbers seem great but  for teh artist  "Suppling product"  and doing  so at a Profit is still an issue!

To test some theorries and concepts i wish to explore  I opted to get back in the designe seat. Seeing them  on  actual feet was a thrill...

Product development is one of teh costliest  factors - one many local crafters do not consider. by sharing that and other cost we can keep local "competitive"  cost  Marketing  as a collective also will cut cost as will bulk buing etc... So  why have few tried this?

I could not ask other designers to contribute their designs, Even though I'd welcome such. So I opted to design a core line of merchandise with teh intent of making that line available to  crafters artisans and desigenr...  Design- These sandals, one of the first  for the new line...    I'm now ating cretyling an merchandise options Next  up  revising production and distribution  logistics and finally developing sound revenue models...  Then of couse the tech to make the plan run more efficiently!

The "Metropolitan Museum of Art Costume Institute gala." shows few stylist know Charles James | Fashion Technology Designers & Startups | Scoop.it
Lupita Nyong’o fumbled at the Super Bowl of fashion.

The actress, who became a global icon after her Oscar win this year for “12 Years a Slave,” went to Monday night’s annual Metropolitan Museum Costume Institute gala in a beaded flapper-esque Prada outfit.

“Lupita Nyong’o losing the perfect score she had been keeping until now,” tweeted Simple Style Guy.
E Online added, “Um...did Lupita Nyong’o just make her first fashion misstep?”
Bonnie Sandy's insight:

I  miss Andre Leon Talley- at least his commentary  was based on knowledge and understanding. I'm tired of writers who "know" Tthis was not a "fashion" event but the "Metropolitan Museum of Art Costume Institute gala." celebrating the work of Charles James. It's like going to a 70's party in  80's clothing...  When we see the others simply regurgitating the same "accepted" looks at least one can appreciate Lupita's attempt... the MET is a Musem... art, history, costume... outfits should be more on the creative, expressive side... Now if only the stylist understood the work of Charles james... Sad really. Just  shows how much teh MET is needed!

The 1920's would be too early (Charles james was born in  1906)... he would have come of age 1930's-his death in 1970's

Fashion’s Missed Muslim Market Opportunity - @BOF Fashion is not just American or European "Luxury" | Fashion Technology Designers & Startups | Scoop.it
LONDON, United Kingdom — Muslim fashion. Simply juxtaposing these two words can cause consternation in some circles. Interpretations of a Koranic verse (an-Nur chapter 24, verse 30) advocating modesty and espousing appropriate female attire (enforced by law in some countries) have long restricted what many Muslim women can wear, distancing them from Western fashion culture. But, today, experts say, things are changing and increasing numbers of Muslim women want to dress fashionably and express their individuality through clothing. The shift is being driven, in part, by significant demographic trends in the Muslim world. “There are varying estimates of the Muslim population, … More

Cherry Blossoms @bklynbotanic Inspires #bkstyle with complete tech savvy guide -so why No GPlus?

Cherry Blossoms @bklynbotanic Inspires #bkstyle with complete tech savvy guide -so why No GPlus? | Fashion Technology Designers & Startups | Scoop.it
A complete guide to cherry blossom season at Brooklyn Botanic Garden. Check the CherryWatch blossom status map and learn about flowering cherry trees at BBG.
Bonnie Sandy's insight:

Cherry Blossoms @bklynbotanic Inspires #bkstyle with complete tech savvy guide -so why No GPlus?
Their cherry blossom page has virtual Tour | CherryWatch Blossom Status Map | Time laspe video and visitors photos- twitter, instagram, Facebook, Flickr, Pinterest.. but somehow not a cohesive social experience.

Lately I've taken to rethinking the content I come across on Social media  and how I repurpose all that content. Last Spring I began a #bkstyle fashion design project with the cherry blossoms as teh inspiration and as the flowers begin to bloom this year, I am looking at extending this project via social channels! However quality of images and ease of use is important.
Which is why I like Gplus with hangouts In my opinion GPlus photos just appear the best of all the social networks - I can just imagine teh cherry blossoms at teh BBG  in real time video or those really cool gifs... but as it is their Gplus page has very little. Though the few photos posted are EXCEPTIONAL! So I'm so hoping that their GPlus ppage improves.

The lack though may be an indication that most businesses have not quite figured out how to integrate GPlus. But I have to admit - It's my new addiction - hours spent browsing Nature shots from across the world in various communities- Vivid- full screen and with really thoughtful descriptions.
I went browsing and i have to admit the images on Gplus were the best- https://plus.google.com/102159038646663458672/photos ;

The missing links in #creativetech #artstech #Fashiontech More than User-friendly #3Dprinting software

The missing links in #creativetech #artstech #Fashiontech More than User-friendly #3Dprinting software | Fashion Technology Designers & Startups | Scoop.it
One of the biggest obstacles for 3D printing is its unintuitive CAD software. To gain mass appeal, the process has to become more user-friendly with simpler tools.
Bonnie Sandy's insight:

The missing links in #creativetech #artstech #Fashiontech: More than User-friendly #3dprinting software - we need tech evangelism on a user level -

The digital camera has shown teh world of opportunity in  consumer  electronic. Consumer cnc products can have an even  bigger impact! These articles came as I'm reviewing  where our poject in adaptation and adoption stands.

to gain mass appeal this technlogy  and samples of applicable solutions need to go on tour

The price of material has to  drop so that items made from these can  be affordable - not  just software nor machinerey  but inks,  filaments  etc
We need neighborhood maker spaces studios and labs

Companies need to invest in the consumer... "Regular folks need access"  thus far thai has been teh playground of thinkers who have become  "makers' but what about the creative community...
this photoshop is great but I'm still try getting some of my  colleagues to learn something else... they're stil trying to figure out the  "full potential of their home printers"

Image - I've learned to "show to  tell" and connect the dots... Listening to teh user shapes tech in a very different manner... and opens tech to differing cohorts...
each year we take on thechallenge... I'm now embarking on design with female  consumers  step one ... education that this exist!

There is a learning curve and adaoption challenges, but this technology is a natural progression.  However I see this more as a cottage industry market... Yes, tech startups there is such a thing.

Bonnie Sandy's insight:

#Emerging #MUA #Stylist #IndieDesigners #Colorist what would you  do if  you could print  you  own make up  #solours  It's Time for  creatives to beef up their  digital color skills! In short there is a need... i've been asking makerbot for a version that  since we met  Bre and teh gang @fashioncamp unconference. My expereince with shapely has been less tahn favorable... so that rush was  a direct result of NEED!

If you're jumping  at the  bits thinking you can repeat this... take a good look  at why this project  raised so much  money. there is a GREAT team  behind this project and it is well laid out. However  makers are passionate and there is already an  existing culture of support. Moreso there is a need I'm a maker as a hobbyist , but i'm also an independent fashion designer...   I have a domestic serger, domestic version of a heavy duty industrial machine a mannequin suitable for a small Ny  apartment, which allows me to work at  3 am why not a 3D printer ... and by teh way their is at least one dress maker and tailor in  each town... GLOBALLY. not to mention hairdressers, jewelry makers, you get the drift!

this year I decide to take on teh challenge of "process' adding technology to the local supply chain and discovered that Kinect type face recognition  software may  have a difficult time recognizing dark skined people the point is Ther is a Lot of work to do... and a lot of opportunities to "crowdfund"
