This is an other one of the articles I reference in the series Planned to publish  June 1st www.bonniesandy.com/blog  I'm not sure how many artisans on Etsy are earning a profit, even if they are selling. I'm not even sure hiven conversations and post  I've observed on social  media communities, if the artisans themselves know, understand or particularly  care. Fashioning Change EMBRACE DA BS-

Simply put the fashion items offered products are well designed for Fit, Fashion and functionailty and  that should be the only reason you need to purchase.   The items in these pre sale intros are at a steal, (designers use sweat equaity to cut cost)  and one time offers.  However  Please scroll down to read about WHY you should support!

New Youk has it's share of Fashion incubators and accelerators, few allow for or cater to the organic Cottage industry that exist.  We chose to start as a pre-stratup lab project  so that we can do what we do best... custom design products that fit our consumers needs. In this case our consumers are our design colleagues  in  less than 3 months we have made significant progress and can stand toe to toe with others well funded projects. However  to move forward we require non eguity funding.  So we tappedin to what we do best design great product, service sand merchandise and offer it as a pre-sale startup to our network! ... Bonnie Sandy's insight:

@ishopnyukco - Who Is Barbie? #socialcommerce. The ultimate fashionista gets that you need to  leverage technology to stay relevant! It also strikes me that few understand relevance. Communication is about speaking inferring the same #context at both ends of a conversation. It strikes me that  many brands do not see the conversation from their consumers point of view. If anything the video highlights what many have been complaining about! It's one of teh challenges we're working on at the www.NYukco.com incubator.

Google and Apple don't really compete - understanding a company's positioning | Fashion Technology Designers & Startups | Scoop.it
wants to sell lots of phones and computers at prices that maximize its profits over the long-term (that's key — Apple, like most successful tech companies, plans way beyond the current quarter and year). It makes good-looking, basic apps that it builds into its hardware because that's part of making sure they just work. But it's all about the hardware.

Google's:

Google’s mission is to organize the world’s information and make it universally accessible and useful.

Google wants data. It can't get enough of the stuff. The more data, the better. In fact, three of the top-10 free apps on Apple's iTunes App Store are from Google. Zero of them are from Apple.
Bonnie Sandy's insight:

What's you  company's miission and how do you plan to make money while you execute? These two tech companies have completely differing missions many often pit them against each other but they have differnt  ethos and so make money in different ways!  We're asking that of local creative businesses, especiall y  fashion designers as we move into the next stage of NYukCo... Apparentlly, some European fashion designers feel threatened by wearable technology.  This may be another case of fighting windmills (with all due apologies to "Don Quixote" by Cervantes).  The trend is already established.  These companies will have to be price competitive to stay in business.  Competition in the fashion industry should be interesting as digital media further dominate where we work, where we live, and even what we wear.  Aloha, Russ.

#FashionCapitals - coming to NY check out Global Fashion Capital at the FIT June 2 – November 14, 2015 | Fashion Technology Designers & Startups | Scoop.it

The past ten years have seen a phenomenal rise in the number of cities worldwide that host fashion weeks. Paris, New York, Milan, and London are currently the four leading fashion capitals, but other cities with emerging fashion scenes are beginning to challenge that exclusivity. Governments seeking to “re-brand” their cities as centers of creativity and innovation acknowledge the power of fashion to elevate an international profile.

The success of a fashion city depends upon a delicate balance of economic, social, and cultural factors. A single week of spectacular runway presentations does not guarantee acceptance by fashion buyers and the international press. Yet with so many cities vying to become the fifth major fashion capital, a new, polycentric fashion

Where’s the focus, fashion? | A global discussion on the Business of Fashion From Trinidad, With Style

Where’s the focus, fashion? | A global discussion on the Business of Fashion From Trinidad, With Style | Fashion Technology Designers & Startups | Scoop.it

"Of course there is a downside to everything. While the idea is encouraging, and the opportunity is great (designers attended this event free of charge) who exactly are “the buyers”? The Shop, Exhibit A and NMFV come to mind. That can’t be all though, right? Three shops that mostly operate on a consignment basis? (NMFV does some wholesale buying, but I wasn’t able to meet anyone anyway so we don’t count). No designer that I have spoken to has said that they met with significant buyers. It would have been nice to see some regional or international department store reps present. I think that is what the designers were expecting as well. Yet, if say Macy’s was there and needed 500 pieces of a particular style in a week, which Trinidad based designer could fulfill such an order?

Bonnie Sandy's insight:
This is a global issue - discussed in this blog post http://blog.nomorefashionvictims.com/wheres-the-focus-fashion/ there are some core types of Fashion events a design label would encounter and need to consider engaging in.
The fashion tech event, conference, summit and/or Hack.I have attended these and frankly I love hacks but their were not teh right mix of fashion, bsuienss and tech... The fashion tech conferences today tend to be skewed towards luxury retail brands and so the info just does not apply. Most of the audience usually cannot even follow the discussions. There is a lot of opportunity there
FASHION SOURCING - Here designer go to find resources and helps--- they cannot be "showing or selling to consumers' or for that matter buyers' they are there to learn and absorb, to shop their suppliers. Too many organizers take only their own concerns and needs into account and the designers are a line item in their budget If you're doing a Fashion Business conference there is not room for anything else...  Fashion as Market - Trade events where fashion designers get to present BUYERS and only buyers - samples are ahead of the current season with shipping immediate (stock required for future) When you are selling to trade you need to concentrate on Selling to trade... no tim e to be cute and social.
Fashion as EVENT - Ther eis a wealth of opportunity to create engaing events! This includes various consumer focused trade endeavors including Vending & Popups as consumer shows... Items are current and priced to move... On teh Down side they train consumers to depend on sales rather than regularly shop your store.. They are needed but need to be redesigned.
Fashion as conversation - Story telling - Think Fashion week, Fashion Film, Where the DESIGNERS present their vison and statement... They choose their models , runway etc... it can also be installaion etc
Fashion as Entertainment where patrons pay to be entertained - The designers do not organize, but are TALENDT and shoudl be paid... hint if there is a door price and a billing of "Fashion" then designers are talent! PAY THEM.. I have participated in my share of shows and they are necessary at a certain point to help develop your style and voice. However They cost...

There is a lot of work BEFORE presenting a trade conference. Trade should NOT be a charitable project there is a conflict of interest... if you want a charity event throw a show or auction...
I am presently in discussion to create a couple of such fashion related conferences and trade events.
The first trade event I ever organized, was in Trinidad circa 1987/88 and I was a little over 20 but there were buyers (Courtesy IDC) I remember a buyer from Canada wanting my 2 piece dye extracted suits... I had no idea what to expect or how to navigate. I was so happy that I was scheduled to leave for Fashion Institute shorthly after.
Today I have attended, partcipated organized several fashion related business events including a trade show sponsored by Macy's. We got several businesses in to see their buyers the first year and a couple more the second. FYI, if Macy's selects your product there is a process that takes months, you need to be prepped to be on the floors and have financial backing to cover your space and opportuniyt... Then there is uality control sizing and other compliance issues as well as global shipping challenges. It's not only the ability to deliver but a solid business plan and finacial backing. Macy's actually has a prep program for their suppliers.
This article was brought to my attention by a designer colleague from Trinidad in our Global indie fashion group on Facebook http://Shopfacebook.Nyukco.com

“Etsy is betraying its original artists by selling out to make money,” said Joy Appenzeller Bauer, an artist who has been selling her work on Etsy since 2009.

“Financially this may make some people very rich, but it is not what Etsy was meant to be about. Artists and crafters are now just window dressing to give the website the appearance that [items] are handmade, but in most cases they are not. They have become the online version of Pottery Barn.”
