RSVP for Free Introduction to Design Patents seminar By USPTO April 22 #NYC #fashiontech #artstech | Fashion Technology Designers & Startups | Scoop.it
What all inventors, entrepreneurs, small businesses, and start-ups should know about design patents. Given the recent increase of litigation between companies over design patents, there is far more interest but little knowledge behind design patents. While many individuals and organizations seek protection for their ideas with utility patents, protection of industrial designs is becoming necessary. Come join us to learn more.
The evening will be a panel presentation comprising of Mindy Bickel (USPTO), Peter Thurlow (Jones Day) and Linda Shudy (Kenyon & Kenyon).  The intended audience for the seminar is inventors, entrepreneurs, students, and small business owners.  Please note that you must RSVP to gain entrance to the building.

I want one in  my design studio... and as I indicated i want a digital  fabric printer and laser cutter also! Moreso i want  intuitive software... teh kind my  mom and aunt can use for their cake decorating... and yes there are cnc type machines for that sector! In short there is a need... i've been asking makerbot for a version that  since we met  Bre and teh gang @fashioncamp unconference. My expereince with shapely has been less tahn favorable... so that rush was  a direct result of NEED!

If you're jumping  at the  bits thinking you can repeat this... take a good look  at why this project  raised so much  money. there is a GREAT team  behind this project and it is well laid out. However  makers are passionate and there is already an  existing culture of support. Moreso there is a need I'm a maker as a hobbyist , but i'm also an independent fashion designer...   I have a domestic serger, domestic version of a heavy duty industrial machine a mannequin suitable for a small Ny  apartment, which allows me to work at  3 am why not a 3D printer ... and by teh way their is at least one dress maker and tailor in  each town... GLOBALLY. not to mention hairdressers, jewelry makers, you get the drift!

this year I decide to take on teh challenge of "process' adding technology to the local supply chain and discovered that Kinect type face recognition  software may  have a difficult time recognizing dark skined people the point is Ther is a Lot of work to do... and a lot of opportunities to "crowdfund"

The data behind the the natural selection process of venture capital. 75% of companies are orphaned or die along the way. 21% get acquired. And the rest (4%) are your potential unicorns.

Bonnie Sandy's insight:

You cannot be in the startup game just for the funding - 75% of companies are orphaned or die along the way. 21% get acquired. And the rest (4%) are your potential unicorns.Even then many question true "worth" vs perception of value ... if there is a need then you have to commit to asuaging that need...Met a lady today who kept stressing the "funding out there", When i question her industry figures were sketchy... her assumption was that she had "scholars" and so was primed to access any available funding. Mind you these were scholar who for teh last 20years have been churning out graduates who are unemployable.

State of the media- potential sustainable #Journalism business models ? | Fashion Technology Designers & Startups | Scoop.it

by Vincenzo Marino – translated by Roberta Aiello
Business models and clichés

The search for a sustainable system for online publishing is a classic that never stops obsessing industry experts. This week, the entrepreneur and Netscape co-founder Marc Andreessen kicked off an interesting and sustained debate on Twitter (here there is a Storify) on the state of the media and possible business models. Andreessen, who says he is optimistic, tries to analyze, tweet after tweet, the reasons that led to the decline. First of all the collapse of the monopolistic and oligopolistic market news system, in a scenario where traditional media (radio, tv and newspapers) no longer have exclusive control of distribution channels nor hereditary privileges in the process of collection, preparation and dissemination of news. Furthermore, the enlargement of its base makes the advertising market more complicated, adversely affecting the value of  journalistic products (more competition means more content and a collapse of quality).

MILAN, Italy — Many who loved the provocative wit and surrealism of Italian designer Franco Moschino thought it was a match made in heaven when, last October, the house he founded appointed Jeremy Scott as creative director. Presented two Thursdays ago in Milan, Scott’s debut runway collection for the brand was an ode to the 1980s, 1990s and American brand iconography, referencing Cheetos, Hershey’s, Froot Loops, SpongeBob SquarePants, Run-DMC and, notably, McDonald’s. The day after the show, a ten-piece capsule collection became available for purchase in Moschino boutiques and online at moschino.com. On their website, Yoox, which powers the label’s e-commerce, explains … More

Are We Producing Too Many Fashion Designers? - BoF - or how to Rethink Fashion Careers! | Fashion Technology Designers & Startups | Scoop.it
LONDON, United Kingdom — Are we producing too many fashion designers? Those posing the question usually assume that a fashion design education should lead directly to a job as a designer at a fashion brand, probably at one of the famous luxury houses. This is based a number of erroneous assumptions. First, it supposes that education is about training and preparing “oven-ready chickens” for the industry. No-one expects a history graduate to become an historian automatically. Equally a fashion degree, with one foot in industry and one in education, does not and should not concentrate on training students for the … More

NEW YORK, United States — This weekend, I read a curious piece of writing by the highly esteemed, recently departed New York Times fashion critic Cathy Horyn. Horyn, who has devoted twenty years of her life to writing about fashion, argued that today, above all, she and many women like her, want clothes that offer comfort. “The desire to be comfortable is profound, shaping attitudes and markets,” she wrote. Comfort, not in the sense of wearing sweatpants all day, but unfussy clothes. This seems fair enough. But as the article unfolded, Ms. Horyn pointed her pen at the fashion avant-garde: … More

to gain mass appeal this technlogy  and samples of applicable solutions need to go on tour

#fashiontech #ecommerce & the search for Well executed Apparel with an artistic flair! | Fashion Technology Designers & Startups | Scoop.it

As the runway revolves, one front-row fashion fixture ponders how practical dressing has come to feel like the most modern of ideas, and why designers haven’t quite caught on.... By now, I suspect, most people know that the purpose of runway shows is entertainment, and to create a feeling of desire. They understand that the main interest of high-fashion companies is economic rather than aesthetic. It’s to sell products and capture new markets, much as Coca-Cola and Apple do."

Bonnie Sandy's insight:
The article quoted, is by Cathy Horn, and so expresses what many woman say... or secretly live for. it is so DIFFICULT  to find well made, well fitted garments, with an artistic flair, That can be delivered in time, to market and sell especially in the local indie market. I cannot or rather refurse to force the  designer to sell exclusively via  http://Catalogue.DeMarketplace.com .  Fortunately I can design and when  I can't  find what I need I  have no trouble produci ng This type of clothing... But there are artist  outther who cannot "design" ... so we plan to accomadate them.
So how does one develop such a supply chain... and consumer base? Well by doing what few startups do sonsumer development. Making the customer part of teh  design process!
