Does Media Affect Teens Lifestyle and Fashion?

Does Media Affect Teens Lifestyle and Fashion? | Fashion effects on teens | Scoop.it
Penelope Elliott's insight:

Teenage girls read magazines, watch reality television, and go on social media almost everyday. The people they see inside the covers on magazines are instantly people they look up to and want to be like.  These things affect the way girls dress, and act.  Teenagers will see the way people are acting and dressing on television and they will think that it's okay to be like that because it gets so much attention from the media.  Celebrities and popular tv shows set examples for the teenagers who are watching them and they aren't always the best people to look up to.  Teenagers are definitely affected socially and mentally by all of the news and pressure to be like everyone else.  This causes many girls acting like people they are not because they think that it is okay because that is what is portrayed in the media. There are only few celebrities now who are setting good examples for the girls reading about them in magazines and seeing them on television.

I agree with you. The media portrays that girls need to be "picture perfect" and causes self-esteem issues. Girls should learn to be themselves.

How Pop Culture Affects Teens - Fashion

Penelope Elliott's insight:
This article is stating how fashion isn't just your clothes. It's almost everything about you: the way you walk, the way you talk, etc. Fashion can affect your life in many ways. It affects your friend group, and they way people look at you. Many teenager's friends influence each others fashion sense even if its not something that they want to wear. Teenagers cling to fashion to express who they are and give them a sense of maturity and the ability to make their own decisions even if it is of just what they are wearing. Teenagers are at a point in time where they are constantly experimenting with fashion just to fit and try to find themselves and what suits them. Fashion is something that is constantly changing so trying to change yourself to fit in with all the new things going on is something that almost all teenagers can't help but doing.

The Barbie Effect | Teen Opinion Essay on barbie dolls, image and negative effects | Fashion effects on teens | Scoop.it
Imagine your perfect woman. 6 Feet tall, weighs 100 pounds, and her sizes are 39-19-33. And a bonus,
Penelope Elliott's insight:

Growing up, little girls played with Barbie dolls thinking of them as the "perfect girl" so of course they would want to look that way!  Girls playing with their Barbie dolls examine everything about them and think that they always need to look perfect and also be wearing the perfect outfit.  Barbies outfits sell more than the actual doll does.  She has many different outfit selections to choose from.  Starting at age three, little girls start to think about fashion and what their doll looks best in.  Little did they know that this actually affects them later on.  Growing up and putting different outfits together for your Barbie was actually developing your fashion sense even when you weren't thinking about it.  But not everyone looks like a Barbie does. In fact, no one does.  So girls can't always look perfect and can't always have the perfect wardrobe.  This is one of the biggest problems in a teenage girls life.  This can cause them stress and many other problems.

I agree with your summary of this article. I like how you discussed that girls can get their fashion sense from how they dress their Barbies.

Penelope Elliott's insight:
This article is about how fashion is really an innovation. Mainly every season new fashion is released so styles are Constantine changing. There is always that one risk taker that comes out with a new style and at first everyone thinks it is weird, but in a week or two it will be the new biggest thing that everyone is wearing. Fashion is something that people with a sense of innovativeness tend to be fascinated in. The trendsetter has a huge impact on the fashion industry and what everyone is going to start to be wearing. Fashion designers always have to be thinking of new ideas because everything is constantly changing and in order to be successful they have to be prepared for that change. Teenagers are one of the biggest consumers of new fashion ideas. Designers try to target teens because they are one of the easiest way to start a fashion trend because almost everyone wants to be wearing what their friends are wearing. Teenagers like new things therefor they will always be looking out for a new style or trend.
