Erica Thayer's insight:

Social media creates huge opportunity for the fashion industry.  1 billion people use Facebook, which obviously creates a huge audience for any brand.  The average total number of Facebook likes for the top 20 brands in the fashion industry is 1.74 million.  These people are allowing these fashion brands to communicate with them and post pictures and videos that encompass styles that they feel match their personalities.  During events, fashion brands will often "live tweet" to interact with and update their followers.  After these huge fashion events, the number of follower often increase by great numbers.  Sites such as Instagram and Pinterest allow brands to help their current and potential customers learn which items to purchase and how to wear their products.  The adoption of social media has allowed the average person insight into the latest trends at lightening speeds.

Erica Thayer's insight:

Social media provides huge opportunity for the fashion industry.  By using social media to post pictures of clothes and outfits, current and potential consumers will be visually stimulated and encouraged to make a purchase.  In order to be successful on social media, the fashion industry must use platforms in a different way than other industries might.  Brands must use social media sites to constantly interact with their customers for increased exposure.  High end brands will not seem so out of reach to potential customers if they use ordinary sites such as Facebook and Instagram.  As long as the brand is using the site to target the right market, interaction will create opportunity for huge social success.  Not only does the use of social media increase interaction, but it also provides instant customer service.  When customers know that they are likely to receive a response on a social media site, they are encouraged to post their positive and negative comments on the site.  Other social medias will then be able to watch how the brand reacts to negative feedback, which will hopefully turn into an overall positive experience. Social media users are drawn to pictures and videos, and the fashion industry often posts visuals to create a vision and experience for the user.  Something that I highly agree with in this article is the use of Pinterest.  Pinterest is a site that is used mostly by females and is a perfect platform for the fashion industry to take advantage of.  Users can repin outfits that they feel encompass their style and direct themselves to sites where they can make a purchase.
