During the nineteenth century, both boys and girls wore dresses for the first few years. Before toddler boys graduated to tunics or trousers they wore full skirted frocks over starched petticoats and drawers until they were about three years old. Showcased are breathtaking Victorian evening dresses from the late 1860s. All are abundantly decorated with yards upon yards of lace, ruffles, and ribbon. Featured is a silk evening dress with a bodice with short tight sleeves ornamented with puffs and a long train accented with sashes and bows.
The fashion conscious Victorian lady would anxiously await her next issue of Godey’s Lady’s Book or the Peterson’s Magazine for the latest clothing styles. If she wanted to make a pair of dainty slippers, both women’s publications would offer colorful full-size engraved patterns. The needlework designs would range from plain geometric outlines to ornate floral patterns. Use our full-size lady’s Victorian shoes pattern to make your own silk embroidered velvet slippers.
