WHO/Europe | Technical information on antigenic drift leading to changes in seasonal influenza vaccine recommendations 2014/15

The recommendation for the A(H3N2) component of the 2015 Southern Hemisphere vaccine was changed during the last Vaccine Consultation Meeting (September 2014) to A/Switzerland/9715293/2013. Since then, fifty-two percent of the A (H3N2) viruses characterized in the US since October have shown ‘antigenic drift’, being significantly antigenically different from A/Texas/50/2012, the A(H3N2) virus present in the Northern Hemisphere vaccine for the 2014-15 influenza season.
