The Wrath of a Great Leader | Martin Luther King, Jr.

The Wrath of a Great Leader | Martin Luther King, Jr. | Family Learning | Scoop.it

How Martin Luther King, Jr. wrestled with anger and what you can learn from his example

Average leaders focus on results, and that's it. Good leaders focus also on the behaviors that will get the results. And great leaders focus, in addition, on the emotions that will drive these behaviors.

One emotion that shapes our behavior is anger, and Martin Luther King Jr., whose 84th birthday we commemorate today, knew of the power that came packed in this emotion. King had reason enough to be provoked, time and again.

Great leaders often have a strong capacity to experience anger. It wakes them up and makes them pay attention to what is wrong in their environment, or in themselves. Without anger, they would not have the awareness or the drive to fix what is wrong.

5 Ways to Write Effective Sentences

5 Ways to Write Effective Sentences | Family Learning | Scoop.it

No sentence can be effective if it contains facts alone. It must also contain emotion, image, logic, and promise.  Eugene Schwartz

My favorite Ernest Hemingway short story is literally six words long:

"For Sale: Baby Shoes. Never Worn."

Beyond what his own interpretation of that story was, we all have a different one when we read it, a different version of what those words mean to each and every one one of us.

Those words are so powerful when linked together that the end result commands your attention.

Record-low temperatures caused by the Polar Vortex have forced schools across the country to close this week. Weather-related school cancellations tend to raise anxieties about whether we're a nation of wimps. During President Obama's first winter in Washington, he complained when his daughters' school closed for bad weather: "We're going to have to apply some flinty Chicago toughness to this town." In response to this latest round of school closings, a Virginia mom sighed, "Hasn’t anyone heard of gloves, scarf and a hat when it’s cold?? Just bundle up—people do it all over the world. We are such wimps to cancel school."
