Cops Aren’t Your Enemy

Cops Aren’t Your Enemy | Family-Centred Care Practice | Scoop.it
Let’s get one thing straight up front: No good cop ever wants to pull his gun. No good cop wakes up in the morning hoping to shoot someone. Firing your service weapon in the line of duty means something has gone terribly wrong. We know, though, that a moment’s hesitation or a second’s distraction for a police officer can equal death—for...

a single hard truth or two - julie ali

http://readingchildrensbooks.blogspot.ca/2014/12/poetry-is-zigzag-to-single-hard-truth.html ; Saturday, December 27, 2014Poetry is a zigzag to a single hard truth or two. When you read a poem and you feel resonance, I use the poem to get to the truth I am working on. In the case of the handicapped sister, I thought the long term care facility would be safer for her than the family situation at home with two decrepit old parents. But of course, the sea was no safer than the land; war does come to us wherever we are and we are all to understand the ultimate fate is death. I thought the sea was safer
than the land.

From "Conversations About Home   (at the Deportation Center) by Warsan Shire in "teaching my mother how to give birth"

What isn't possible in prose can sometimes be said in poetry. The failure of decorum that is present sometimes in poetry allows for the direct expression of what sits inside us like lethal weapons. In most cases, prose will hold the grenades in the hands but not pull the pins. Poetry pulls the pins off grenades that you then lob into the air at what?
At the situation hopefully.
What situation?
I'd say the messes you can encounter when you are fully awake to them.
It's easy to be oblivious to messes.
It's even easier to not face the messes when you are awake to them and simply shrug and leave them as they are.
That's the way we usually do it -don't we?

When the messes don't tangle our own we shrug and walk away as if the strangers who have been harmed were responsible for their own disasters.
It's a different story when it is one of your own and you have been negotiating for her life--- with all concerned.

When you arrive at the place of cynicism where I am now, it is easy to escape the entire situation by letting your family member struggle to death. That's the lot of family in the facility who do not have advocates.  But everyone needs someone. It's hard to die with strangers. And even poetry won't help you if you are completely alone, stuck like a bottle bobbing in an inexplicable sea of people who don't speak your language of confusion.

Poetry is a zigzag to a single hard truth or two.

What is home might be the place we construct inside our heads and if you are handicapped, the home is a confused and messy place. In the end it might be this way for all of us; whether we are "normal" or "handicapped" might not matter as we age and become withered stalks of what we were once in youth. In the end we might all be handicapped. The tapping cane of poetry is helpful in our blind tripping to the end, but  we still need a construct of home inside us to keep us intact in the place of strangers in the long term care facility. If you can, stay at home. The door you close to your own bedroom, in a home you own might be the only comfort left to you as you go.

The sea of the long term facility is no safer than the land of the home. And so why not stay home? Why not accept the reality that it is dangerous wherever you choose to die?
And perhaps it is more dangerous to die in a place with poorly trained professionals rather than at home with loving amateurs.

who is in charge of this mess? julie ali

Sunday, December 28, 2014who is in charge of this mess?--------------------Filing this action in the cold, short days of winter last year, was a last resort. No-one wants to sue an oil company. Well, I take that back, there are LOTS of people that should sue an oil company but just won't, because they are certain they will lose and it will cost them a fortune to do so. We took that into very serious consideration. It seems that at either end of the spectrum we risk losing our farm, so this motion was taken on with burdened but determined hearts. THIS ACTION IS FOR OUR FAMILY, OUR COMMUNITY, OUR FUTURE At it's simplest, this is a case about our constitution and a families right to security and peaceful enjoyment of their property. At it's most complex we will present our case for health harm and property damage from industrial operations in close proximity to our home. Operations and emissions that were not adequately or ethically disclosed to us, (or our neighbours, community or municipality for that matter) in absolute negligent defiance of the duty of care owed to us (all of us) by the Company. and understand
that the land
is all we have
discover the garden
about us
and protect what is ours
to treasure
see the small and the grave
everywhere
we are ordinary
but many
and in our connections
we persuade
other families
to work with us
to alter what is supposedly certain
but how is it certain
when we have doubts?

and understand
the land is our children's
what is done to their inheritance
cannot be altered
the aquifers once destroyed
will not return to pristine
the graveyards of the fracked fields
will not turn back to good farming land
and what we have underneath
will spill and travel
if given enough encouragement
and who is to say
that the carbon capture program
paid for by our dollars
will ensure that the CO2 will stay safely
under the ground?
who is in charge of this mess?

Paul Band members hold candlelight vigil for ‘Christmas Angel’ | Family-Centred Care Practice | Scoop.it
More than 100 people gathered on the Paul Band First Nation on Christmas Day to support each other and pray for a young girl they call “Christmas Angel,” who was brutally assaulted just days before the holidays. The crowd huddled together outside a gas station near where the girl was found to hear speeches, prayers and drumming. People held candles, and a child in the crowd held up a sign that said “Hope.” Later, they lined the street with glowing candles in the snow.

I thought the sea was safer than the land - Julie Ali

When do you decide to pour the acid in you into another container?
When do you put down the sharp spear in your hand?
When do you stop writing about sin and negligence?
When do you forgive and give into the scar?

Or do you never do this sort of resolution?
When do you go home?
What is home?
In the dark room the voices in her and the voices in me --meet in the slurping noises of the breath in the mask over her head and we speak as we might have spoken in childhood. I tell the masked woman to sleep.

why have you come here
to watch her?
is there a reason
for checking on the mask?
is the mask
a barrier
to death?
is it here for keeping her for her own purposes?
what is it for?
and what is home?
is it the bed
of a facility?
is the end process
the degeneration of the body
in the room?
why have you come here
to watch her?
is there a procedure by which
you confess
your sins
and admit transgressions?

why have you come here
to watch her?
where is home for her now?
has there ever been a home
for one
who has not fitted into the mouth
of the society
that is full of broken teeth?
what jaw was she wobbly in?
is the soul the place
where I am right now?
or is her fate the route I am seeking?
the passage is bitter
there are cloves in my hair
ants scurry over the body
the desert is full of bones
because all of my children are in the water
I have turned to stone
and the washcloth is on the floor

why have you come here
to watch her?
are you afraid to finish
without her?
is there a path of tears
that we all follow
to meet with death
in ways we do not understand?
how are we to make this journey?
I can't sleep
the shoreline is closer
the sea rises
the aunt that has died
is suddenly near
(my mother tells me she speaks to her)
I understand ghosts
and demons
the story is all about sorrow
I patch the cut in my wrist
and make a heart of what is withered
I thought the sea was safer
than the land.

true democracy - julie ali

http://readingchildrensbooks.blogspot.ca/2014/12/true-democracy-starts-with-reform-our.html

Sunday, December 28, 2014True democracy starts with Reform our voting system. Hold a national discussion on the health of our democracy, address the growing and undemocratic power of the Prime Minister’s Office and explore the options for a more meaningful electoral system. Consider the risks of “first past the post” and vote on whether it should be replaced. Consider proportional representation.----------------Access to information. Seek true solutions to the increasing corporate control in Canadian journalism. Whatever is “dumbed down” must be “smartened up.”---------Make poverty history. Meet Canada’s commitments and push other nations to meet theirs in order to achieve the Millennium Development Goals.- a new year beckons
like a baby
in a crib
asking for
I don't know what
I lay the stones down
and pick her up
to rock in the chair of this hour
I say to myself
surely it is time for poetry?
surely the new year
asks for love mercy and compassion?
surely you have walked through mud
for years now?
surely there is a door that will open to you now?

 a new year beckons
the cry is faint
but I hear it     as I wait for you
the story is always of those who have
and will not help
those who do not have anything
and what can I do
to help mend the feud?
there are walls everywhere
the garden is hidden
the children cry out in the foster care system
and I have not found out
what happened to seven year old Jack
in the police report that is withheld by the EPS
true democracy starts here with information access

a new year beckons
no one is interested
in these failures of deMockracy
where we pay for everything
but cannot get the information we pay for
the Good Samaritan shuts the windows
and pulls the curtains closed
stonewalling continues
as they look for policy and protocol
that is absent in their process manual
the emperor is without clothes
everywhere I go
and I am the only one singing out the news
that we are given fiction
when we ask for the truth in the long term care facilities of shame

a new year beckons
from the Edmonton Public School system
to the federal government of Canada
we are ignored and used
for their own purposes
the developer councillors mouth
their untruths on Edmonton City Council
where the development of the city center
is to save us from what?  perhaps the boom and bust cycles
I believe    we are taken each time we vote
and if we do not vote
worse things happen in the form of sharks
rather than piranhas
we are caught in the trap of the failure of democracy
and yet a new year is born   the baby cries in the cradle   I pick her up
