Tales of Faerie: Gender roles in two Swedish fairy tales

Tales of Faerie: Gender roles in two Swedish fairy tales | Fairy tales, Folklore, and Myths | Scoop.it
Pamela D Lloyd's insight:

Here's an interesting take on gender roles in fairy tales, using two Swedish stories, one with a male protagonist and one with a female, as examples. The blog author, Kristin, admits to wariness in response to "feminist readings [of fairy tales] that deem sword weilding (sic) types of bravery, or other stereotypically male actions, as 'better.'"

I'll admit that I enjoy fairy tales in which female protagonists take an active role, but I agree with Kristin that we should not equate that only with traditionally male activities. Making choices, especially when those choices are difficult, is the important element.

Myth & Moor: "Into the Woods" series, 36: The Speech of Animals | Fairy tales, Folklore, and Myths | Scoop.it
Animal tales are often told not just as simple entertainments but as teaching stories, or as part of healing rites intended to foster a proper relationship between humankind and the natural world. Today, in our rapidly urbanizing society, this teaching/healing aspect of myth -- and, by extension, of Mythic Arts -- has become more important than ever, while we stare ecological disaster in the face and while more and more animal species fall under threat of extinction.
