7 Things You Should Know About Badges | EDUCAUSE.edu | Teaching, Learning, and Leadership | Scoop.it

Educause Learning Initiative:

Badges are digital tokens that appear as icons or logos on a web page or other online venue. Awarded by institutions, organizations, groups, or individuals, badges signify accomplishments such as completion of a project, mastery of a skill, or marks of experience.

I'm anticipating the announcement at the upcomming EDucause Conference of a new Badge economy that will make it much easier to use this kind of open resource reward in my online classes.

I'm ready to try this. Although my graduate students earn an official transcript and a signed certificate when they complete the E-Learning and Online Teaching Graduate program, I think adding badges to the mix would help them in their job quest. The folks likely to be impressed with badges are just the people my graduates should be working with.

Oskar Almazan's curator insight, May 29, 8:51 AM
This week I had the chance to lead a virtual reality lesson with a group of second graders. It was absolutely amazing to see the students spinning around and looking side-to-side as they explored the top of a mountain and the bottom of the ocean. On this 360 Thursday I wanted to share some of my absolute favorite resources for virtual reality in education. Whether you’re totally new to this concept or looking for new educational VR apps to add to your toolkit, there are lots to choose from! Don’t worry, I’ll tell the whole story of my second grade virtual reality exploration in a June post (sign up here to get it in your inbox). And if you want an e-Book for summer reading you can grab my free getting started guide for virtual reality in education by clicking here.
The list below includes virtual reality apps for mobile devices and websites that give you quick access to virtual reality videos for your classroom. Of course, having a headset like the low-cost Google Cardboard is great but most of these virtual reality in the classroom resources work on web-browsers too. If you have a favorite you think I should add to the list, make sure to leave a comment at the bottom of this post!

Millennials Are Struggling With Face To Face Communication: Here's Why

Millennials Are Struggling With Face To Face Communication: Here's Why | Teaching, Learning, and Leadership | Scoop.it

We love talking about what millennials know. As a group that’s become the dominant force in the workforce, we applaud their smarts on tech, social media, and even the age-old practice of branding. Yes, millennials might arguably be one of the overall most intelligent generations to come around. However, that’s not to say they still don’t have a lot to learn, especially when it comes to face-to-face communication.

As the generation that grew up with communication becoming more efficient via digital, their biggest strength could also be a critical weakness. While the way they say things has become more direct, their messages sometimes lack. Why?

Because as one of the first to grow up in a digital world, they’ve been afforded a privilege not found in our day-to-day.

To connect is technical .and temporary. To relate is to communicate and live in community. It provides a sense of belonging to a place and people.

It is not just the millenials who struggle. I have seen "teachers" who could not conduct a decent conversation or greet me properly because they were too busy on their Twitter feed.
