Great side-by-side comparison of Ads vs. Promoted posts. A lot of what you may know already: use Ads to get Likes, use promoted posts to push important content out to your fans. One thing not mentioned: best to use Promoted Posts once you've seen that the post has a lot of virality already, so you know it will be well-received.

"If you have minimal likes, start off with Facebook ads to develop likes and get targeted followers. Once you’ve got a fan base going, start to use your Promoted Posts to show off your events, promotional offers, news and given you have targeted followers, these readers will be inclined to read the post and even share it across their network."

Thoughtful comparison of two common paid promotions.
