How record labels are learning to make money from YouTube

How record labels are learning to make money from YouTube | Fabulous fashions & Amazing discounts | Scoop.it
Helienne Lindvall: Rather than getting unauthorised versions of videos taken down, labels are monetising them through YouTube's ad partnerships

Shortly before Christmas the Gangnam Style official video broke a YouTube record by clocking up a billion views. How much Psy will pocket for these views depends, of course, on what his record deal stipulates, but the Guardian can now at least reveal what some of the biggest independent labels make. Recently Martin Mills, founder and chairman of the Beggars Group (home to artists such as Adele, Jack White and The xx), told me that last year 22% of the label group's digital revenues came from streaming – and that the majority of its artists earn more now from track streams than track downloads.

Though it's not required to do so, Beggars Group currently pays artists 50% of streaming revenue, as Mills "thinks it's the right thing to do in this nascent stage of the market". This is not, by any means, an industry standard. Robbie Williams's co-manager Tim Clark says that not many labels pay that much: "I believe some record companies are paying some artists that rate – Universal among them."

Mills says the highest unit revenue for streaming comes from Spotify – a significant multiple of what Beggars makes from YouTube, though the number of streams on the latter is greater.

Anyone who has ever tried to get unauthorised versions and videos of their music off YouTube knows that filing takedown notices is like playing Whac-a-Mole, as new versions pop up almost immediately. But now, with YouTube's ad partnerships, record labels are discovering a better solution: monetising them.

Martin Goldschmidt, founder and managing director of Cooking Vinyl – whose roster includes the Prodigy, the Enemy and Ron Sexsmith – says the record label can make an average of $5,000 per million views, under certain circumstances. The highest rate being paid is for non-skippable pre-roll ads, but even that rate varies and can be higher, depending on how badly the advertiser wants its ads to be used. Conversely, not all YouTube streams are monetised, as it depends on where the viewer is based. YouTube exists in 120 countries, but is only monetised in 26 of them. Often this is due to local songwriters' collection societies being dissatisfied with the much lower rate they're offered.

Some indie labels say about 30% of YouTube ad revenue goes to it and owner Google (though the site told the Dead Kennedys that it takes 45%) and 40% goes to the owner of the recording (usually the record label). The label gets another 20% of the ad revenue if it can claim ownership of the video, that is it's an "official video" and not a video of someone dancing to the track. And last – and least – the songwriters/publishers get to share the remaining 10% between them.

The 10% figure may seem puzzling to many songwriters. As I have written previously their royalty statements are telling a different story, with a million views resulting in around $40 in royalties.

Not so the record labels. "Our revenue is growing month on month at a fantastic rate," says Richard Leach, digital distribution manager for Cooking Vinyl. "It's unhelpful to get hung up on per-stream rates, and it's better to focus on the aggregate figure, which is really healthy."

The number of views on YouTube for the label's acts doubled between February and November 2012. Meanwhile its YouTube revenue more than doubled. "It's because we've learned how to exploit those views better," Leach explains.

Ads in different territories also pay different rates, and deciding what type of ads go on which video is often decided on a case-by-case basis – and can shift after the video has been posted for a while. Putting a non-skippable pre-roll ad on a video can result in fewer views, but in certain cases that may be worth it, says Leach.

There are also third-party ad sales teams, including Vevo, that specialise in certain areas, such as music, sports or lifestyle. These teams know the demographics better than Google Ads, which has a massive inventory, and so is able to sell at a higher rate. Vevo has no user generated content (UGC), so has a better understanding of the type and quality of that content, enabling it to be more specific about what it is offering to advertisers. With Vevo there is no bargaining to be had, as it charges a flat rate per video.

"We're anticipating YouTube becoming our most important revenue stream in the future," Leach concludes.

Now, if the opacity of how the songwriters' share of ad revenue is calculated – and the issue of how the numbers currently don't seem to add up – can be resolved we may even see ad partnerships rolled out and videos monetised in the 94 countries where YouTube is accessible but unlicensed.

This resolution may come sooner rather than later. The next Plugged In will take a look at how some songwriters and self-releasing artists have figured out a way of making money from UGC – and not only from their own videos.

Austin Politowicz's curator insight, October 13, 2014 10:08 PM

This article shows how much artists make (if any at all) from their songs being streamed or viewed on youtube. it shows which services pay the artists more and which don't pay at all. Most importantly, its showing how record labels are starting to learn how to make money off of the videos being viewed on youtube.

Ryan Seymore's curator insight, October 12, 11:10 AM

This link shows solution towards making sure the record label and artist get paid for their hard work. We are currently in transition from CD to digital so there are going to be some loop holes. I feel that eventually there will be successful regulations to help prevent piracy.

The Polish Lie and the Romanian Promise

The Polish Lie and the Romanian Promise | Fabulous fashions & Amazing discounts | Scoop.it
By Austen Davies

A report submitted by the former British Ambassador in Warsaw at the time of the great Polish Invasion has ‘proved the lie’ and confirmed that the odious, treasonous, self-seeking ego that is Blair knew full well the implications of the Labour government’s ‘non-control’ of Polish immigration were.

That power-crazed megalomaniac, who is still treated like royalty instead of the unscrupulous criminal he is, knew full-well that the estimate of “13,000 maximum” Polish immigrants was ridiculously understated – and he was told as much by the Polish Government Minister who was incredulous to the point of looking for the ‘catch’ when he was told that no restrictions would apply to migrants seeking to move to the UK - and that once here they would enjoy full access to the Labour market – and all the ‘benefits’ associated with being ‘British’.

“The Polish minister instinctively knew what Tony Blair’s Labour government consistently denied: the immediate abolition of all border restrictions would lead to a surge of his people to these shores” said the former Ambassador.

More than one-million Poles have settled here.

Under the Labour Government 80% of new jobs were going to foreigners; British jobs for British workers? Never on the agenda; just another lie to those whom our successive governments hold in utter contempt. Us.

That there was a short-term boost to the economy thanks to the availability of cheap workers is true – but it was only ever going to be very short term. The strain that such an influx put on everything from housing to welfare didn’t matter; it will be someone else’s problem by the time it hits.

But it’s always our problem. ‘Us’ again – down here on Planet Earth trying to live with the social chaos and misery that are synonymous with the reclassification of regions and entire towns to ghetto status.

And from January, 29 million citizens from these poorer EU member states will have the right to live and work here. Yet a recent poll conducted by a national newspaper showed 82% of Brits wanting the Border closed down. One-way, that is. Did you think you lived in a democracy? Think on.

Cameron is flapping, of course; he hears the clanking of chains that marks the approach of the Ghost of Elections Yet To Come, and it’s smoking a cigarette and clutching a pint of beer. So he flexes his surgically-enhanced biceps and squares up to a projected image of the future;

“You can’t have benefits for 3 months”; they’ve managed to get by without benefits in Romania– they’ll manage another three months.

“Beggars will be deported”; you’ll have to catch them first.

It’s pathetic. And so are we if we believe this Heir to Blair.

1.Whatever ridiculous gesticulations the so-called Prime Minister of the Subservient European State of Blighty-in-the-Clart makes, he cannot stop 29 million Romas and Bulgars getting the ferry from Calais if they’ve a mind to, and

2.EU laws (and they are the ones that count) dictate that no citizen of a Member State can be treated any differently to any other citizen of any other Member State – so he’s talking . . . . oh, put your own expletive in!

There are three things we must do – and we must do them now:

1.CLOSE the Borders; Britain is full

2.RESIGN from the European Union; we never agreed to it anyway

3.BEGIN the forced repatriation of all undesirable foreigners; starting with the two mentally-deficient Michaels currently on holiday in Belmarsh. Prison-life in Pakistan will suit them.

The British National Party and ONLY the British National Party is committed to these three points – these three promises. In these three commitments are all the reasons why you and everyone you know should vote BNP.

No other Party will make these commitments; no other Party is exclusively dedicated to serve the British people of Britain – so start spreading the word today.

Before it’s too late.

Suppressing feelings of compassion makes people feel less moral | Fabulous fashions & Amazing discounts | Scoop.it
It's normal to not always act on your sense of compassion—for example, by walking past a beggar on the street without giving them any money. Maybe you want to save your money or avoid engaging with a homeless person. But even if suppressing compassion avoids these costs, it may carry a personal cost of its own, according to a new study published in Psychological Science, a journal of the Association for Psychological Science. After people suppress compassionate feelings, an experiment shows, they lose a bit of their commitment to morality.

42 so Jesus called them and said, "You know the so-called rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their great men overbear them:

43 not so with you. Whoever wants to be great among you must be your servant,

44 and whoever of you wants to be first must be your slave;

45 for the Son of man himself has not come to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many."

46 Then they reached Jericho; and as he was leaving Jericho with his disciples and a considerable crowd, the son of Timaeus, Bartimaeus, the blind beggar who sat beside the road,

47 heard it was Jesus of Nazaret. So he started to shout, "Son of David! Jesus! have pity on me."

48 A number of the people checked him and told him to be quiet, but he shouted all the more, "Son of David, have pity on me!"

49 Jesus stopped and said, "Call him." Then they called the blind man and told him, "Courage! Get up, he is calling you."

50 Throwing off his cloak he jumped up and went to Jesus.

51 Jesus spoke to him and said, "What do you want me to do for you?" The blind man said, "Rabboni, I want to regain my sight."

52Then Jesus said, "Go, your faith has made you well;" and he regained his sight at once and followed Jesus along the road.

Bulgarians and Romanians make up one in 10 of the homeless people living on London’s street, charity reveals

Bulgarians and Romanians make up one in 10 of the homeless people living on London’s street, charity reveals | Fabulous fashions & Amazing discounts | Scoop.it

Around ten per cent of London's homeless are from Bulgaria or Romania, statistics reveal.

Figures released by homeless charity Broadway show there were an average of 1,672 people living rough on the capital's streets between May and October this year.

Of those, an average of 13 were from Bulgaria and 157 from Romania, the charity found.

This means 9.8 per cent of London's homeless were from the two Eastern European countries on average - almost one in ten.

The average number of homeless people from the UK was 790 - around 47 per cent.

This means 53 per cent of those sleeping rough in London between May and October were from other countries

Romanians were the second largest group, outnumbering those from Portugal, Spain, Ireland, France, Germany and Italy combined.

They were followed by an average of 153 people from Poland.

The findings were included in a report from the Combined Homelessness and Information Network - a database commissioned and funded by the Greater London Authority (GLA) and managed by the charity.

The report also found in the period September - October 2013, 778 people were sleeping rough in London for the first time.

The figures come ahead of an expected influx of migrants from Bulgaria and Romania when immigration controls are lifted on January 1.

A study by the Public Policy Research says the UK could see an increase in ‘anti-social behaviour’ such as ‘aggressive begging, rough sleeping and even criminality’ as a result of the new arrivals.

It also said the arrivals could put huge pressure on housing, schools and hospitals across the south east and London.

London councils spend millions of pounds attempting to tackle the problem of homelessness and begging in the capital - some with more success than others.

A group of 20 homeless Romanian beggars living in Park Lane, central London, were returned to their native country earlier this year.

But within matter of weeks, six were said to have returned to their camp.

Today, those living on the streets warned those thinking of coming to the capital to stay away.

Speaking to The Sun, one immigrant called Gheorghe said: There is nothing for me in Romania, but there is nothing for me here either.'

Another Bosnan Vasile said: 'I need money to eat, I sleep rough because I can't afford to live anywhere.

'It is easier for a rat or a pigeon to find somewhere to sleep than me.'

How the United States is reinventing itself yet again | Washington Post Blog

How the United States is reinventing itself yet again | Washington Post Blog | Fabulous fashions & Amazing discounts | Scoop.it

We have moved from the Great Recession to the Great Malaise. Despite massive government stimulus, the world’s largest and most advanced economy continues to limp sideways. Unemployment remains stubbornly high. Growth remains slow and prospects for employment growth remain bleak. Wages continue to stagnate. Recent college graduates and young professionals may well be the first generation to live a life inferior to those of their parents, conventional wisdom holds. The United States has entered a period of slow decline, much like the sun finally setting on the British Empire in the 20th century.

And that’s not all the pessimists say. They also argue that while the United States continues to dominate in the emergence of new technology powerhouses, the biggest IPO of the decade belongs to Facebook, a social network that is more media company than technology innovator. Stifling red tape and regulations has driven costs of testing new medicines and medical devices so high that many drug companies have shifted testing regimes and market focus to Europe and Asia.

Despite mounting evidence that skilled immigrant entrepreneurs have delivered a wildly disproportionate share of the country’s technology innovation and technology job growth, the powers that be in Washington, D.C. have, even with broad bipartisan support, not mustered up the votes to reform the country’s regressive and punitive immigration policies. Add to all of this an aging populace requiring more and more support from younger workers, ballooning health costs and a tax structure that beggars the young to underwrite benefits for the aged, and the United States looks more and more like a historical footnote than a superpower.

Peel back the layers of the onion, and the reality appears quite different. In fact, the United States stands on the cusp of a dramatic revival and rejuvenation, propelled by an amazing wave of technological innovation. A slew of breakthroughs will deliver the enormous productivity gains and the societal dramatic cost savings needed to sustain economic growth and prosperity. These breakthroughs, mostly digital in nature, will complete the shift begun by the Internet away to a new era where the precepts of Moore’s Law can be applied to virtually any field.

Computer-assisted design and fabrication will reshape manufacturing forever. These technologies will slash waste and replace nearly all conventional manufacturing with more environmentally friendly and cost-effective additive manufacturing run with robots and computer programs. Complex systems resistant to modeling will succumb to advances in big data that allow mankind to finally make sense and improve upon the most intricate multi-faceted interactions. Where big data fails, ubiquitous crowd sourcing will harness untapped brain cycles to train systems and solve problems, one small activity at a time — on a global scale.

Russia & China Know Final Currency Devaluation Is Coming | Fabulous fashions & Amazing discounts | Scoop.it

Robert Fitzwilson tells King World News:

... The currencies that comprise the Dollar Index and the dollar itself are really part of the same team.  The components move around a bit to create excitement, but those countries and their currencies are joined at the financial hip.  We recently saw Japan appear to be getting out of line with Mr. Abe’s call for unlimited printing, but then subsequently saw an announcement that the yen had depreciated “enough”.

This is all part of the pretend drama that the fiat currencies are engaged in a currency war.  If there is a war, it is the fiat group against gold and the yuan.  A wondering mind, however, might consider the possibility that the latest moves by Japan are really about rearmament given their growing tensions with China and North Korea.  An announcement of rearmament would be politically problematic.  Unlimited stimulus would provide the perfect politically correct cover for rearmament.  One can only ruminate on the possibilities.

Talk of currency wars continues to dominate the financial news.  Ghosts of the ‘30s and the “beggar thy neighbor” policies have been resurrected.  This is not about beggaring a neighbor this time around.  This is not about nationalistic policies to provide markets for goods and employment for citizens. ...

Conservation: Key to sustainable agriculture

Conservation: Key to sustainable agriculture | Fabulous fashions & Amazing discounts | Scoop.it

Conservation is an everyday word that not many people attach importance to."

Conservation is an everyday word that not many people attach importance to.

BY BRUCE GEMMILL

When used in the agricultural context, it is a word of very significant importance. It is the essential visual difference between commercial and subsistence agriculture. Property rights and conservation go hand in hand; no property rights, no conservation.

Conservation in agriculture has many different facets. Physical conservation works such as contours, waterways, crest roads, are built to prevent sheet and gully erosion. Maintaining organic matter in the soil profile and on the surface will increase fertility and water-holding capacity.

Leaving crop waste to rot down and practising minimal tillage will build organic matter. Rotating restorative crops with exhaustive crops is critical.
Maintaining soil PH as near 6,5 as possible is also important. Protection of grazing areas, indigenous trees and wildlife areas is also of great importance. Efficient water storage and use is another very important aspect of conservation.

Good conservation is always a prerequisite to achieving high yields from both crop and animal enterprises. Poor farming practices, climate change and increasing populations in many parts of the world are driving these areas towards chronic food shortage; including Zimbabwe.

It is predicted that sub-Saharan Africa’s population will increase by 250 000 000 by 2030. Where will the food come from to feed these extra mouths?
Land reform has proven that subsistence agriculture cannot feed Zimbabwe.

The revival of commercial agriculture is the only way chronic food shortage can be avoided. Worldwide food is getting more expensive to produce.

It is obvious that in the absence of subsidies, this cost increase is passed onto the consumer.

Food producing countries will only export after domestic needs are fulfilled.

Relying on food aid and handouts to feed the nation is highly precarious and degrading, because we are offering ourselves as a beggar nation, unable to feed ourselves. Before land reform we only needed to import food that could not be produced in our subtropical climate or after a serious drought. We should regain that status as soon as possible.

To get our agriculture commercialised will be a huge operation both physically and financially, but if we are to protect our population from the ravages and suffering inflicted by chronic food shortages and the accompanying high prices, then we need to start the change-over as a matter of urgency.
A high yielding stable agriculture is the only barrier we can build to protect our people from chronic food shortages.

Very few of the seized commercial farms are producing anywhere near their potential, indeed many are in a state of extreme dereliction.
This was not the intention of land reform, but it is the result. I do not intend straying into the political arena, except to say the threat of chronic food shortage is above partisan politics. Clearly Zimbabwe is faced with a massive problem that must be resolved.

Bruce Gemmill is a former commercial farmer.
