FDA Targets Companies for Facebook 'Likes.' Is Twitter 'Favorites' Next?

FDA Targets Companies for Facebook 'Likes.' Is Twitter 'Favorites' Next? | Extreme Social | Scoop.it

Over the last two years, two companies have found themselves in the sights of the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) after the regulator warned them for violating federal advertising regulations by "liking" unapproved claims on the social networking website Facebook.

But while FDA's warnings have yet to set off a wider crackdown on pharmaceutical companies, recent changes to the social media platform Twitter have raised the possibility that similar attention might soon be focused there.

But while FDA has issued 11 Warning Letters regarding the improper use of Twitter to promote products, none have mentioned the use of a Twitter feature similar to Facebook's "Like" button: The "Favorite."

The star-shaped button has been around for years, offering Twitter users the ability to mark a post as a "favorite" of theirs, or simply offering users the ability to notify a poster that they have seen a tweet. But while the feature is old, within the last few months Twitter has rolled out a new aesthetic design that allows users to see what their friends are "favoriting" more easily than ever.

If FDA can chide a company for "liking" a post—something which requires a thorough review of every Facebook post—it can surely do so for "favoriting" a post as well, and even more easily now thanks to the change in which favorite tweets are prominently displayed on a user's profile.

Good question Alex. As you say, it appears that major pharma companies may already be aware of this and have SM policies in place that address this.

You say "this could be one area FDA will soon be watching, if it isn't already."

I don't think the FDA spends time searching Facebook and Twitter pages for these things. Most likely, it is reported by competitors or by disgruntled employees or physicians. The FDA's BadAd program is set up for just that purpose.

Until now, I've never bothered to look at posts other people have "favorited" unless it's my post -- I can see the latter using Tweedeck. I suspect this is true for other Twitter users as well.

But now that you "outed" this, perhaps the FDA will hire consultants to monitor this kind of thing using software. Boy, that would be a monumental waste of money! What's the ROI? A warning letter?

The new feature, seen by The Wall Street Journal in the Twitter app for iOS, added an expanded label to some hashtag searches such as #tbt (Throwback Thursday), #smh (Shaking My Head) or #oitnb (TV series “Orange Is The New Black”). The labeling gives the hashtags a sense of legitimacy and order as related to a certain event or subject.

It wasn’t clear how these labels were generated. Some included an option for users to rate their accuracy. Many hashtags, such as #MH17 for Malaysia Airlines Flight 17, didn’t trigger the feature. A Twitter spokesperson declined to comment on the supposed new feature.
