With Common Core State Standards, Why Service Learning Matters Even More

With Common Core State Standards, Why Service Learning Matters Even More | Exploring Common Core | Scoop.it

By Cathryn Berger Kaye and Maureen Connolly

We are all familiar with the idea of service in communities and service in schools. Service learning, however, has distinctive aspects that separate this pedagogy from what we often call “community service” or “project-based learning.” With high-quality service learning, students:

Increase academic rigor through relevance and application of content and skillsParticipate in social analysis as they investigate an authentic community need, typically through action research using media, interviews, surveys, and observation More

Common Core can be a positive force for change.

Elizabeth Sky-McIlvain's comment, August 13, 2013 8:13 AM
There are several unsettling things here - would like to see it done again with the national CCSS - now there's a project! What bothers me? Low Creativity in ELA (no wonder so many admins are mandating information reading and writing). What? No Collaboration in math? Take the ELA writing test on the Computer but don't set a standard for its use. And heaven forbid anyone should be asked to Communicate in the process of Learning. There is a concordance app somewhere - think I'll find it.
Crystal Cherise Conley's curator insight, August 13, 2013 2:33 PM

Stem Specialist's curator insight, June 30, 2013 12:00 PM

I recently had a conversation about the relevance of teaching cursive handwriting in schools. What do you think?

Jennifer Shackles's comment, July 9, 2013 11:22 AM
How can students read "primary" historical documents if we have generations who cannot read cursive? Only linguists will be able to. How do these students "write" and "sign" their names on official documents? It may not need to be stressed as it once was, but I think it is still a necessary skill.
R.Conrath, Ed.D.'s curator insight, August 3, 2013 7:48 AM
Cursive is very important because is helps develop motor skills. It's not just about pretty penmanship.

Mentor texts are a powerful way to teach both reading and writing, two activities that have a special place in the common core.  We can teach the way we want and still conect to the CCS.

Connie Wise's curator insight, April 11, 2013 12:41 PM

"Big ideas about the past, we learn, are subject to change.

As you and your students read nonfiction, look for additional ways that authors shape their big ideas. Consider making a collection of mentor texts which students can refer to as they write."
