MURRELLS INLET: Murrells Inlet 2020 director to retire after completion of group’s last major goal | Business | MyrtleBeachOnline.com | Explore Murrells Inlet | Scoop.it
When the Murrells Inlet watershed management plan is completed later this year, Sue Sledz, executive director of Murrells Inlet 2020, will be near retirement and the organization will need to do some soul-searching.
Sandra Bundy's insight:

Sue will be missed and her accomplishments as ED of MI2020 are many.  The Watershed Plan when completed is a living document for protection of the Murrells Inlet Estuary and Oyster Harvests.  The plan isn't the end but a new chapter in the stewardship of the creek.  Other long term goals have been established by the BOD of MI2020 and ongoing programs will continue to have a positive impact in the Murrells Inlet Community.

"The mission of Murrells Inlet 2020 is to promote and advance infrastructure improvements including beautification of the core commercial districts, to enhance environmental education, to initiate a redevelopment of the core commercial district which will reduce blight, and to utilize conservation and preservation methods to secure quality wetlands for future generations of residents and visitors to appreciate."

The mission is far from over and will continue for years to come.

The making of a Fishing Village

In the 1970's Murrells Inlet was home to a fleet of drift fishing boats that carried passengers out for full and half day fishing trips and had a thriving fishing industry. In 1967 the Capt. Alex was the first vessel of its kind on the east coast making Murrells Inlet one of the top spots for daily Gulf Stream trips at that time.

Beaufort Mayor Asks Residents to Write Lawmakers on Off-shore Drilling

Beaufort Mayor Asks Residents to Write Lawmakers on Off-shore Drilling | Explore Murrells Inlet | Scoop.it
A Lowcountry official is urging residents along the coast to speak-out to lawmakers on off-shore drilling. The federal government is planning to include the Atlantic coast in oil exploration in the next few years, but not without hearing from a few opponents first. Where do federal lawmakers stand on the issue? Out of 1,629 comments on oil exploration sent to the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM), a letter in support of it comes from several South Carolina and Georgia congressmen.
