The demands of leadership today require a more adaptive approach; the age of seat-of-the-pants leadership is gone. Sure, you might be able to achieve some success with a haphazard approach – but you must approach your leadership with intention, flexibility, and discipline in order to succeed repeatedly and consistently for the long haul. But that doesn’t mean discarding foundational elements that have been proven to work throughout time. In fact, there are two essential traits to leadership that are unchanging. These two stalwart elements should anchor your leadership — no matter the year, no matter the challenge — as long as you commit to developing these two most essential traits, you will be in a position to thrive. Always. The 2 essential traits that must be at the heart of your leadership approach are: Competence and Character.

As a leader, you already know you should manage your time better and deploy your resources more strategically. But to really address the problem, you need to look at the underlying dynamic that constrains leadership capacity: your margin of power.
The concept of a margin of power, designed to help professionals discover the limits of their work capacity, was developed by the educational psychologist Howard McClusky. Though he remains relatively unknown in business circles, McClusky was an influential and pioneering theorist in adult education. As a professor at the University of Michigan in the 1930s (he remained there until his death in 1982), he wondered why some adults could successfully start and complete new projects, goals, or initiatives time after time while others became quickly overwhelmed and unable to continue. His research eventually led to a simple formula that expresses a relationship between the “load” a person carries (the demands placed on them by their family, work, civic duties, and their own ambitions) and their available “power” to carry it (their own energy, skill, competence, and integrity, along with the support they get from their communities and employers).

Serious leaders understand that, both by design and default, they’re always leading by example. Some want to “lead from the front” while others prefer “leading from behind.” But everyone senses their success — and failure — at leading by example is integral to their “leadership brand.” Smart leaders want to build their brands. The lead-by-example stories executives tell sharpen their leadership brand propositions.
The critical first step: Encourage people to list the three most important — or effective — ways they lead by example. Talk about them all you want but — ultimately — they must be written down in shareable form. Those answers begin building productive paths and platforms for leadership development.

Research shows that managers see far more leadership potential in their employees when their companies adopt a growth mindset — the belief that talent should be developed in everyone, not viewed as a fixed, innate gift that some have and others don’t. But what are those organizations doing to nurture their talent?
To explore this question, let’s look at Microsoft, which is deliberately creating a growth-mindset culture and, in that context, rethinking its approach to development. As a result, previously unidentified — yet skilled — leaders are rising to levels they might not have in a traditional development model.
The CEO is generally the bellwether of a company’s culture, and under Satya Nadella’s leadership, Microsoft is emphasizing learning and creativity. Nadella believes this is how leaders are made, and that idea is reflected in several programs, which we’ll describe here.

Every life form except human beings operates by instinct in the genetic code. It has no multiple choice. Only humans have multiple choice. In the winter, the goose flies south. Why? Because he’s a goose. He couldn’t fly west. If you said to the goose it’d be better to go west this year, he’d ignore that advice. He’d keep on flying south. Why? He has no alternative. He has no other way. He is only driven, as all life forms are driven, by instinct in the genetic code.
Except human beings. Now why not human beings? Because we’ve been given the dignity of choice. We’re not like a robot. We’re not stuck like a tree, using up all the nourishment and, with nothing left, you die because you can’t change locations. Not true. Humans can go north, south, east, west. Humans can change and do anything they want to do. We’ve been given the dignity.
But here’s what’s interesting about all life forms except humans: Every life form except humans strives to the max of its potential. How tall will a tree grow? As tall as it possibly can. You’ve never heard of a tree growing half as high as it could. No, that is impossible. A tree grows as high as it can, drives down every root it can, produces every leaf it can, extends itself as far as it possibly can. Every life form extends to the max, except human beings. Now why not human beings? Because we’re not robots. We’ve been given the dignity of choice.
Choice is the most foundational part of life that we often ignore or hide from so it is well worth understanding.

Former IBM chairman Lou Gerstner says a failure of institutional culture isn’t what causes major shortfalls in a company’s performance and a failure to serve customer needs. CEOs must do more than establish corporate values. Look at what your actions tell employees.
Trust is based on the principle of predictable returns. If I do this for you, I’ll get this in return. The shorthand term is “reciprocity.” In his book How the Mind Works, Steven Pinker shows exactly how our brains are wired to respond to actions that build trust. He points out that reciprocity is an evolutionary strategy, hardwired into our genes. If you give me a hand, I’ll return the favor—especially if I think there’s a strong likelihood of repeated transactions with you in the future. Trust hinges on having enough information over time to determine whether reciprocity occurs. Pinker shows that our brains are hardwired to detect whether reciprocity and trust exist—or whether we’re getting the short end of the stick. This “cheater meter” is working in every conscious moment. If I think that you’ve treated me fairly, in ways that I predicted, then my cheater meter is in the green. If not, it swings into the red.
We have become so cynical that we can't detect the truth regardless of where it is coming from, it definitely isn't politics.
