While I wish I could say that many board of directors are responding well, I believe the opposite is happening.  They are really becoming less visible publicly and more dominant in the background. Some more militant shareholder groups are bragging about how they are going to put their own CEO is place so they can control the activity better.  This is a tough issue that needs attention for sure.

I totally agree with this premise. While the numbers are not good for the most part, when you take a different look at the labels as Tracy has done here there is hope. Modifying your approach can make a major change in the 49% that Tracy calls Key Contributors. They are not fully engaged but do their job. Your goal should be to move them up to Fully Engaged.  This is were Employee Engagement frameworks are best utilized..

I really like Gordon's article.  He is absolutely on the mark. The old sink or swim mentality breeds anger, frustration and very low emotional intelligence in my opinion. I totally agree that this is short term thinking and so 20th century.  The Next gen will come from the millennial's and they have a completely different point of view. It will start with generational respect. This will be the key to growing this next batch of leaders.
