International Monetary Fund paper dismisses rightwing argument that redistributing incomes is self-defeating
Leonidas Athanasopoulos's insight:

The International Monetary Fund has backed economists who argue that inequality is a drag on growth in a discussion paper that has also dismissed rightwing theories that efforts to redistribute incomes are self-defeating.

The Washington-based organisation, which advises governments on sustainable growth, said countries with high levels of inequality suffered lower growth than nations that distributed incomes more evenly.

Ego depleted | Evolution of societies and politics | Scoop.it
Leonidas Athanasopoulos's insight:

Interesting article on the culture of consumerism, the connection with sharing/broadcasting on social media.

"In the future, we’ll have an economy based on the labor of sociality in social media networks that are subsumed by capital: that is, we’ll fight for attention on Facebook, etc., and that effort will be harvestable as data by the firms that own the networks, who will sell us tools derived from that data to abet our struggle for more attention."

Glenn Greenwald: Reporting the NSA story hasn't been easy, but it's always been fulfilling. It's what journalism at its crux is about, and we must protect that
Leonidas Athanasopoulos's insight:

Manipulation and control of press and journalism is an existing threat to society. Online media are an alternative but also easier to control since the distribution of their content is limited and easier to monitor. But professional journalists also have responsibility for this evolution of their environment.

Leonidas Athanasopoulos's insight:

The sharpest increases in both fast-food intake and BMI were in Canada, Australia, Ireland and New Zealand. “The more aggressive market-liberalized countries have a higher consumption of fast food,” De Vogli said.

The lowest increases were in countries with more stringent market regulation, such as Italy, the Netherlands, Greece and Belgium. “Trade protection might not always be a good thing, but our study found consumption of fast food was much lower in countries that have higher regulation.”

A multinational team of journalists spent months combing through secret tax haven records revealing offshore holdings of China’s rich and powerful.

Would you take smart drugs to perform better at work? | Evolution of societies and politics | Scoop.it
Drugs that boost brainpower are increasingly being taken by healthy people to study or work harder. Could this become the norm, or a condition of employment?
Leonidas Athanasopoulos's insight:

Would you let your child get on a bus driven by someone on mind-altering drugs? What about having an operation conducted by a surgeon taking stimulant pills?
