The Shape of Future Jobs

The Shape of Future Jobs | Evolution of societies and politics | Scoop.it
Between now and 2030, countries all over the world will have to create about 600 million jobs just to absorb the expanding working age population – while simultaneously coping with rapid technological change, unprecedented demographic changes, accelerating urbanization, climate change, and economic convergence obstacles. Against this backdrop, the World Economic Forum’s Global Council on the Future of Jobs — in which I participate — is launching a survey of 2,000 firms to learn how they anticipa

“If the government said you have to have a tracking device, for certain you would rebel,” notes Schneier. “But the government doesn’t have to say that because you do it willingly and they just get a copy of the data.”

A bad couple of decades for the typical American
Leonidas Athanasopoulos's insight:

A new study from the Russell Sage Foundation reveals that while wealth levels for all classes of Americans declined between 2007 and 2013, Americans in the bottom half of the distribution are poorer than they were way back in 1984. Meanwhile, elites have amassed considerable wealth since then

This yearlong investigation examines how doctors and lawyers, working at the behest of the coal industry, have helped defeat the benefits claims of miners sick and dying of black lung, even as disease rates are on the rise and an increasing number of miners are turning to a system that was supposed to help alleviate their suffering.
Leonidas Athanasopoulos's insight:

Human is the most cruel of all animals. I am always surprised by stories like this, when one (or more) person profits and makes money at the expense of public health.

Tracking for Health

Tracking for Health | Evolution of societies and politics | Scoop.it
69% of U.S. adults track a health indicator like weight, diet, exercise routine, or symptom. Of those, half track in their heads, one-third keep notes on paper, and one in five use technology to keep tabs on their health status.
Leonidas Athanasopoulos's insight:

Technology is providing the tools to track activity and health indicators. Big data will enable future health specialists to analyse and predict life style effects on health.

International Monetary Fund paper dismisses rightwing argument that redistributing incomes is self-defeating
Leonidas Athanasopoulos's insight:

The International Monetary Fund has backed economists who argue that inequality is a drag on growth in a discussion paper that has also dismissed rightwing theories that efforts to redistribute incomes are self-defeating.

The Washington-based organisation, which advises governments on sustainable growth, said countries with high levels of inequality suffered lower growth than nations that distributed incomes more evenly.

Leonidas Athanasopoulos's insight:

European banks stress tests truth: We all deserve better than a yearlong exercise in futile tepid air. But Europe’s taxpayers deserve it most of all.

ECB testing European banks, isn't it obvious that there is a conflict of interests? There should be an independent agency performing these tests.
