Will the ECB Continue Its "Sherman's March to the Sea" with the Greek Economy? | naked capitalism

Will the ECB Continue Its "Sherman's March to the Sea" with the Greek Economy? | naked capitalism | Evolution of societies and politics | Scoop.it

As much as I’d like to be hopeful about the Greek vote, I’m deeply concerned that like the Arab Spring uprising, which in the end seems to have done little to help struggling people in the Middle East, and led to civil war in Syria, that what seemed like a promise of a better day for ordinary people will lead to even worse outcomes. As much as the Eurocrats have become unaccountable and causally malevolent in how they operate, Greece is too weak a vehicle to take up a successful, frontal revolt. Greece’s defiance may put forces into play that will accelerate the dissolution of the Eurozone, which is inevitable given Germany’s insistence on running trade surpluses and its refusal to finance its trade partners or more to greater fiscal integration that would do more or less the same thing. But the Greek people themselves are not likely to come out winners.

Leonidas Athanasopoulos's insight:

Leonidas Athanasopoulos's insight:

Disgusting policies of "keep them out of my yard and I do not care what happens to them". They are common in all the developed world. The same happens in Europe, Australia or US. Common sense and humanitarian principles are not so common any more. What is worst is that societies are considering such policies normal and do not care much.

Situation is getting way more complex if we consider that in most cases these people, seeking a better life, have been forced to leave their homeland as a result of unrest caused by rich-countries policies... like providing weapons to rebel movements etc.

Three important meetings today will reveal whether Greece is gaining any political ground in its uphill battle to roll back austerity.

An excellent political analysis of the Eurozone and Greek stories. Lets see if Pandora's Box is about to open.

But the messed up values of the implicated parties, do not allow much optimism.

Greece’s confrontation with the euro overlords will shape resistance to austerity – and the future of the whole European Union
Leonidas Athanasopoulos's insight:

Food for thought. I would add to this article that SYRIZA government failed to prepare and present a realistic alternative plan. They went on war and they did not take their rifles. They thought that they would win the war just because they did not approve it. How can this kind of leadership be successful?

Negotiation Breakdown Exposes Widening Rift Between Germany and Greece | naked capitalism

Negotiation Breakdown Exposes Widening Rift Between Germany and Greece | naked capitalism | Evolution of societies and politics | Scoop.it
The negotiations between Greece and the Eurogroup are on a worse trajectory than conventional wisdom would have you believe.
Leonidas Athanasopoulos's insight:

The bottom line is:

"The Greek government and its creditors appear to have fundamentally different views of what Greece’s powers are. In effect, the position of its various lenders is that Greece has traded away significant, if not most, of its sovereignity in return for bailout money. And its creditors have set up a debtcropper system in which Greece can never free itself of its obligations. Put it another way, Greece has been reduced to a subject of various largely unaccountable Eurozone level authorities, with none of the benefits of being a member of a true federal union, the most important being the recipient of fiscal transfers. Greece, by contrast, takes the view that it is still a state and has rights that cannot be taken away."
