The fat cost of fast food: Each fast food meal bumps up BMI by .03, study says - NBC News.com | Evolution of societies and politics | Scoop.it
Everyone knows fast food isn’t healthy, and it’s been linked to weight gain and the obesity epidemic. After all, most fast food is laden...
Leonidas Athanasopoulos's insight:

The sharpest increases in both fast-food intake and BMI were in Canada, Australia, Ireland and New Zealand. “The more aggressive market-liberalized countries have a higher consumption of fast food,” De Vogli said.

The lowest increases were in countries with more stringent market regulation, such as Italy, the Netherlands, Greece and Belgium. “Trade protection might not always be a good thing, but our study found consumption of fast food was much lower in countries that have higher regulation.”

How we did Offshore Leaks China

A multinational team of journalists spent months combing through secret tax haven records revealing offshore holdings of China’s rich and powerful.

Would you take smart drugs to perform better at work? | Evolution of societies and politics | Scoop.it
Drugs that boost brainpower are increasingly being taken by healthy people to study or work harder. Could this become the norm, or a condition of employment?
Leonidas Athanasopoulos's insight:

Would you let your child get on a bus driven by someone on mind-altering drugs? What about having an operation conducted by a surgeon taking stimulant pills? Tracking for Health

Tracking for Health | Evolution of societies and politics | Scoop.it
69% of U.S. adults track a health indicator like weight, diet, exercise routine, or symptom. Of those, half track in their heads, one-third keep notes on paper, and one in five use technology to keep tabs on their health status.

International Monetary Fund paper dismisses rightwing argument that redistributing incomes is self-defeating
Leonidas Athanasopoulos's insight:

The International Monetary Fund has backed economists who argue that inequality is a drag on growth in a discussion paper that has also dismissed rightwing theories that efforts to redistribute incomes are self-defeating.

The Washington-based organisation, which advises governments on sustainable growth, said countries with high levels of inequality suffered lower growth than nations that distributed incomes more evenly.
