Jeffrey Lapin's insight:

Very informative article by Chris Dreyer of Attorney Rankings (via Circle of Legal Trust) about the common mistakes lawyers make when checking their website rankings.

From the post: "The best thing you can do to get accurate measurements related to how your site is performing in search is to use something other than the search engine itself. Marketing a website in search also requires much more all-encompassing goals and a patient approach. Attorneys need to be thoughtful about the data they gather and how they interpret that data."

Jeffrey Lapin's insight:

Corporate and branded content gets shared more on mobile than desktops.

From Kevin O'Keefe (via Real Lawyers Have Blogs) "Want blog posts shared on social? Design for mobile users" post:

"A new Forrester survey of 37,000 consumers found that mobile users are more likely to share a branded post than desktop users. While 28% of desktop users share branded posts that rises to 40% of tablet users and 36% of smartphone users.

In addition, almost half (49%) of tablet and 46% of smartphone users engage with corporate content via likes, shares or comments, compared with just 37% of desktop social users."

My Takeaway: You need to use responsive design for their blog posts and ensure that it looks good and is eye-catching on mobile devices to maximize that it gets read, liked and shared.

Writing Content That Panda and Your Audience Will Like

Writing Content That Panda and Your Audience Will Like | Everything Marketing You Can Think Of | Scoop.it
Don't let Google Panda get you down. Learn how to write engaging content that is focused on your reader and converts better.
Jeffrey Lapin's insight:

Good article about writing quality content by Mindy Weinstein via Search Engine Journal. She discusses the "you attitude" and how it can help with your writing, which in turn helps you will Google's Panda updates.

Some of her tips include:

> "Everything you write should take into consideration the needs of the people you are targeting."

> "Make the message about the readers, which could be describing their concerns, feelings or interests, then explain how your message applies. Continue to address the person reading your message."

> "You must learn about your target audience’s biases, education, age, status, style, and personal and professional concerns."

> "Replace words such as 'we' and 'us,' with 'you' and 'yours.'"

> "Don’t assume the reader knows your intent. Tell him or her what to do – in other words, provide a call to action."

> "[Y]ou need to give multiple options to your Web visitors to consume the information."

> "People need to actually find your content, which means search engines have to know what your pages are about."

Her conclusion is also very good: "When you create content that incorporates these powerful communication concepts, you should start seeing better conversions, which means you can worry less about Panda. Remember to focus on your readers, because it really should be all about them. It’s part of the secret sauce of amazing content!"

His Answer (from a partially invisible Matt Cutts): The most common SEO mistake is not having a website. Without a website you are invisible on the web.

My Observation: While Cutts' answer is correct for SEO, his explanation is not. While it is separate from SEO, you are not "invisible" on the web if you do not website. Social media posts do show up in search.

How to write great comments on blogs

How to write great comments on blogs | Everything Marketing You Can Think Of | Scoop.it
Find out how to write great comments on other people's blogs to get them to notice you and then visit your blog to read and comment on what you've written.
Jeffrey Lapin's insight:

Good post and useful infographic by Alice Elliott (Fairy Blog Mother) about how to write comments on blogs. Her conclusion provides a good summary:

"Don’t leave your comment hanging in mid air. You wouldn’t do that in a post, so the same criterion should apply when you write great comments. Structure your response quickly and concisely towards a natural close, drawing it back to a wider context to leave the way open for other commenters to contribute. As well as encouraging more comments from others, the points you raise may invite the author to visit your blog to read what you write and comment in return, thus resulting in a positive and useful blogging relationship."

While the post was written for blog comments, a lot of the advice would apply to social media posts.

Jeffrey Lapin's insight:

Google recently it updated Webmaster Tools' "Little or no original content" Page recently.

The update changed, in the Examples, "Scraped content" to "Content from other sources. For example: Scraped content or low-quality guest blog posts".

Unfortunately, there is no link to "low-quality guest blog posts" as there are with the other examples. The closest I could find is from the Google Webmaster Central Blog from May 6, 2011, titled "More guidance on building high-quality sites."

Matt Cutts has frequently spoken about guest blogging as it relates to linking. This change seems to expressly indicate that Google will "penalize" sites for poorly written guest posts.

I would speculate that Google has been doing this for quite a while, but, wanted to make it clear it was doing so.

This change should not be that big of surprise though as Google has repeatedly indicated that wants quality content and will "punish" poor content.

What Craigslist Can Teach Us About SEO

What Craigslist Can Teach Us About SEO

Very interesting post by Neil Patel via Search Engine Journal about Craiglist and why it is so successful.

Craigslist is an extremely popular site. Patel looks at Craigslist and discusses some of the aspects of the site in terms of SEO and its other notable features that makes it so popular. These aspects include:

Focus is on functionality than design; Optimized for local searches and has over 700 local sites; Makes real connections between people; Lets users contribute; and Most of it is free.

While most brands could not, and should not, emulate Craigslist, they can follow a lot of what is doing in their own way.

Your Google Algorithm Cheat Sheet: Panda, Penguin, and Hummingbird

Your Google Algorithm Cheat Sheet: Panda, Penguin, and Hummingbird | Everything Marketing You Can Think Of | Scoop.it
Do you have questions about the Panda algorithm, the Penguin algorithm, or Hummingbird? This guide explains in lay terms what each of these Google algorithm changes is about and how to improve your site so that it looks better in the eyes of the big G.
Jeffrey Lapin's insight:

Very informative article by Marie Haynes (via Moz) about Google's algorithmic changes including Panda, Penguin and Hummingbird. For each of these, she explains what the change involved and how to recover from decreased rankings because of the change.

Panda is primarily about site quality. Penguin is aimed at unnatural backlinks. Hummingbird is for Google to better understand what user's are actually searching for.

She has a nice summary of all 3 of these algorithm changes and what you should do: "It appears that Google's goal with all of these algorithm changes (Panda, Penguin and Hummingbird) is to encourage webmasters to publish content that is the best of its kind. Google's goal is to deliver answers to people who are searching. If you can produce content that answers people's questions, then you're on the right track."
