Facebook Admits Organic Reach Is Falling Short, Urges Marketers to Buy Ads

Facebook Admits Organic Reach Is Falling Short, Urges Marketers to Buy Ads | Everything Marketing You Can Think Of | Scoop.it
If they haven't already, many marketers will soon see the organic reach of their posts on the social network drop off.
Jeffrey Lapin's insight:

The organic reach of many marketers on Facebook has or will soon drop off.

In a sales deck obtained by Ad Age, Facebook states, "We expect organic distribution of an individual page's posts to gradually decline over time as we continually work to make sure people have a meaningful experience on the site ... [marketers are told they should consider paid distribution] to maximize delivery of your message in news feed."

This document, also, seems to indicate that "the main reason to acquire fans isn't to build a free distribution channel for content; it's to make future Facebook ads work better."

A Facebook spokesman confirmed the document and this movement, "We're getting to a place where because more people are sharing more things, the best way to get your stuff seen if you're a business is to pay for it."

Hashtags on Facebook Do Nothing To Help Additional Exposure

Hashtags on Facebook Do Nothing To Help Additional Exposure | Everything Marketing You Can Think Of | Scoop.it
Significant time has passed since Facebook fully rolled out their hashtag implementation. We decided to dig into the data to see the impact of hashtags on the news feed.
Jeffrey Lapin's insight:

EdgeRank Checker conducted a study with the assumption, "is that if people see an object in the news feed with a hashtag they’re interested in, they will click the hashtag to discover more interesting content related to the particular hashtag. Brands that talk about trending hashtags may receive additional exposure due to other Pages using hashtags because their Page may show up unexpectedly."

The results did not match this assumption. In fact, the study found:

Posts with hashtags actually have less Viral Reach, on average, than posts with hashtags;

Engagement per fan was down for posts with hashtags; and

Organic Reach had a small decrease when using hashtags.

To help verify these findings, EdgeRank Checker also checked hashtag usage on Twitter, in which they found, "Using a hashtag typically resulted in roughly double the likelihood of being ReTweeted."

Assuming the study is accurate, you should not use hashtags on Facebook if you are trying to increase your "reach" or engagement.

10 reasons why Businesses should choose Twitter over Facebook | Everything Marketing You Can Think Of | Scoop.it
Do you think Facebook is the best Social Media platform for brands? Here are 10 reasons why Businesses should choose Twitter over Facebook
Jeffrey Lapin's insight:

Interesting post by Hitesh Motwani (Digital Insights) about why businesses should use Twitter over Facebook.

After listing 10 reason, he concludes, "Twitter and the Internet are filled with more facilities to support and promote brand recall online, a lot more than what Facebook can offer. I’m not undermining the potential of Facebook marketing, but as a social media platform Facebook was made for more private interactions. It’s for friends and family to connect, and less for companies to engage consumers."
