Welcome Back to Sports, Nate Silver—Now Solve These Eight Sports Problems

Welcome Back to Sports, Nate Silver—Now Solve These Eight Sports Problems | Everything connects to marketing: thought leadership in a marketing world | Scoop.it
Rejoice, sports fans: Nate Silver is back on our team. After three years as the New York Times’ in-house statistical warlock, Silver has signed a new deal with ESPN, one that will allow him to indulge his interests in noninaugural balls.
MTD's insight:

The greatest statistical innovator and wizard of our time has moved jobs. Nate Silver has been at the NYT for years but now is getting back into sports. Surely there are other areas where we could use - and need - his almost scary ability to discern truth from a blizzard of numbers?

Organizing R&D for the Future

Organizing R&D for the Future | Everything connects to marketing: thought leadership in a marketing world | Scoop.it

Executives from around the world agree that research and development is a global effort requiring collaboration. Yet many say their organizations must improve in this area — evolving from the centralized approach that’s prevalent today — to meet strategic goals. In other words, for today’s R&D organizations, there is a significant gap between knowing what to do and actually doing it. Vital as it is to their futures, the art of collaboration is one that many R&D organizations have yet to master.

This article both highlights this problem and highlights what R&D organizations can do differently. The prescription for what R&D organizations can do differently comes from a group of “high-performing innovators” — companies where respondents to a survey reported higher organic growth than competitors and attributed a large portion of that growth to new in-house products.

Disruption Vs. Innovation: What's The Difference? | Everything connects to marketing: thought leadership in a marketing world | Scoop.it
People are sometimes confused about is the difference between innovation and disruption.
MTD's insight:

A lot of people think disruption and innovation are the same. They're not. Innovation is a process; disruption is a sudden emergence that changes the rules. Both are inevitable and necessary. But they don't work in partnership all the time.

Confucian Crackdown: New Chinese Law Enforces Filial Piety

Confucian Crackdown: New Chinese Law Enforces Filial Piety | Everything connects to marketing: thought leadership in a marketing world | Scoop.it
On Monday, Beijing issued a decree that has riled many across the nation.
MTD's insight:

How can you enforce care and empathy? Perhaps you can't, but behaviourism comes in here. Sometimes, whether you're talking about a family, a business or an entire nation, you have to lead change through saying 'this is right, that's not'. Leadership has a massive effect on culture and this is an example of the one trying to force the other. A very interesting positive lesson to draw from something that - on the face of it - we in the west find very hard to understand.

The countervaling truth is that by enforcing that which only has meaning when you're doing it truly voluntarily, you not only make it ineffective, you potentially reverse any positive effects.

Interesting little knife edge you have to walk on, when considering the topic!

How can we make advanced robotic manufacture and assembly systems that adapt and change with the astonishing change hitting today's manufacturing world? The only answer is enable them to 'sense'.
