During my time as a freelance photojournalist and as a Master’s candidate at Ohio University, one of the biggest challenges of my career came in November of 2012, while working on a project about the stigma associated with being an ex-convict. Suddenly, an incident of domestic violence unexpectedly became my business.

This is a very difficult call to make.  As imagemakers do we close a blind eye and continue to capture the moment, no matter how dangerous it can be for the people involved or yourself?  Are you doing it for the right reasons?  What happens to the victims once your photo essay goes viral and you become a success?  Difficult questions, but I don't have the answers.

Kramer O’Neill is a photographer, animator and designer, recently relocated from Brooklyn to Paris. His short films and sound pieces have been shown in festivals internationally, and his photos have appeared in galleries in New York, London, Paris, Louisville, Turin, Cardiff and Los Angeles. He is a founding member of the strange.rs photo collective and was the 2010 Photo Urbanism Fellow at Design Trust for Public Space in New York; excerpts from that project, Same Time Every Day, were displayed in the Atlantic Avenue Subway Station in Brooklyn in 2011. His two self-published photo books are Pictures of People and Things 1 and Till Human Voices Wake Us; they are available for sale on his website and in various bookstores.
