Software is not a manufacturing industry, thus not a product. | opensource.com | Everything about open source (except code) | Scoop.it
The open source model enables the economics of software development to align with efficiency, high quality, low cost, maintainability, fit for purpose, and scalability when the developer is compensated for the scarce good of their limited time and...
Cedric Thomas's insight:

The Open source business model is about *services* not products. Period.

Either service invoiced hourly as in training, expertise, consulting, development, etc. or service invoiced as a retainer as in subscription, support, update, etc (this is basically the "insurance" business model).

Selling open source as a product is not a sound strategy. Either because any competitor can under price you or because you will be pushed to the murky waters of open-core...

Having said that, there are some grey areas:

- is a conveniently packaged software or documentation a sustainable product strategy? (my answer: no)

- aren't automated and packaged insurance-like services just like products? (my answer: yes!)

A very interesting article on thought leadership. Could you check off any of these as describing yourself?

Do you aspire to be a thought leader?

Do you want to be seen within your niche as the "go-to" person, the "expert", the source of trusted information?

Would you like your clients and prospects to use YOU as their benchmark for thought leadership within your niche or industry?

What are you doing right now to establish yourself as THE thought-leader who drives conversations around leading issues in your niche? Do you abdicate this role to your peers or do you aggressively seek it for yourself?

If you do want to become a thought leader, what is your specific written plan for achieving it?
