The most intelligent groups aren’t just a bunch of smart people

The most intelligent groups aren’t just a bunch of smart people | Everyday Leadership | Scoop.it
“We found that there is indeed a single statistical factor for group intelligence that predicts how well the group will perform on a wide variety of tasks. We called this factor “collective intelligence,” and it is only moderately correlated with the average individual intelligence of people in the group. In other words, having a bunch of smart people in the group doesn’t necessarily lead to a smart group. Instead, we found three other factors that predict collective intelligence.”

7 (Even More) Ways to Become a Better Leader

7 (Even More) Ways to Become a Better Leader | Everyday Leadership | Scoop.it
Good leadership is about making wise decisions and letting people know you are human.
Joe Boutte's insight:

A few reminders of everyday leadership.  My favorite is number 7:  Be True to Yourself.  Anyone can pretend to be in charge, stomp around and chew out low performing employees. That's not too difficult. Faking authority and knowledge is a good way to convince people you should not be leading them. Be yourself. Admit failures. Show them you are human. Your employees will be ready to follow.

Authentic!

The power of being a follower - Deseret News

The power of being a follower - Deseret News | Everyday Leadership | Scoop.it
Perhaps it is surprising that being a leader is not the main thing that Google seeks when hiring.
Joe Boutte's insight:

Being a leader sometimes means knowing when to follow other leaders or work more collaboratively.  If everyone is a general, there  may not be an Army to lead.  Consider the wisdom of knowing when your influence is best exerted through being a team member to get the job done. Being a follower is not a bad thing, it should be situation dependent and non-permanent.  Being a good follower is often a special characteristic of a good leader.

3 Steps to Leading Your Life in a More Excellent Way

3 Steps to Leading Your Life in a More Excellent Way | Everyday Leadership | Scoop.it
Different is good.

In fact, I believe different can be very, very good.

Of course, thinking and being different than those around you is easier said than done. After all, going against the flow, thinking outside the box, or deviating from what everyone else is doing is almost certainly uncomfortable if not outright unsettling.

But what if I were to tell you being different is exactly what’s needed to flourish and thrive in today’s dynamic, fast-paced, ever-changing world? At a time in our nation’s history when we need more people to step up to help make a positive difference in our homes, workplaces, worship spaces, and communities, it seems many of us are content to merely settle–more intent to stick with the perceived safety of the status quo than to risk taking a stand for what we truly believe is worth fighting for in our lives.

And it’s a big mistake.

Joe Boutte's insight:

Excellence requires courage to create better alternatives.  We should aim to  avoid mediocrity by settling for  "conventional wisdom", "the way it's always been done", or "getting along".   Using all our gifts, talents, and experiences to create new approaches is key to everyday leadership.

Blue Ocean Leadership - blogs.hbr.org (blog)

Blue Ocean Leadership - blogs.hbr.org (blog) | Everyday Leadership | Scoop.it
Are your employees engaged in moving your company forward? Here’s how to release their untapped talent and energy.
Joe Boutte's insight:

The article outlines research on blue ocean leadership and provides non-traditional perspectives and approaches to improving organizational leadership.  A focus on capturing new leadership practices helps differentiate the approaches from other leadership development programs and practices.  Here are some excerpts:

"Blue ocean leadership focuses on what acts and activities leaders need to undertake to boost their teams’ motivation and business results, not on who leaders need to be."

"...when people are engaged in defining the leadership practices that will enable them to thrive, and those practices are connected to the market realities against which they need to perform, they’re highly motivated to create the best possible profile for leaders and to make the new solutions work. Their willing cooperation maximizes the acceptance of new profiles for leadership while minimizing implementation costs."

"The key to a successful organization is having empowered leaders at every level, because outstanding organizational performance often comes down to the motivation and actions of middle and frontline leaders, who are in closer contact with the market."

Jaro Berce uses martial arts, nature, and "effortless" leadership to describe the similarities between these disparate areas, while highlighting the integrative nature of everyday leadership.  The idea of not over-exerting our leadership should resonate and help leaders govern themselves in such a way as to maximize their influence.
