Norman Foster has a qualm about Apple's new headquarters: What happens when people stop driving?
Joe Boutte's insight:

I agree that future buildings should be flexible and architects, planners, and transportation leaders will help us to find better work-life balance. I hope that one day commuting becomes unnecessary and we can live and work within five miles.  Driving should be reserved for cross-country travel, weekend getaways, and other pleasurable experiences.

FCC CIO Shares Practical Advice for Empowering Employees

FCC CIO Shares Practical Advice for Empowering Employees | Everyday Leadership | Scoop.it
If CIOs want to remain relevant, they must listen to the public and to the people on the front line, says CIO David Bray.
Joe Boutte's insight:

Dr. David Bray's practical advice for empowering individuals and teams in CIO shops is a good reminder for everyday leaders in all organizations who want to empower and enable people.  The three things he highlights are practical and actionable:

  1. Autonomy to bring their ideas to fruition.
  2. Measurable progress updates.
  3. A worthy cause that adds value for the public.

These tools, ideas or lessons-learned are useful beyond CIO teams.  Similar to David's third thing, I would suggest a closely related fourth element, "creating a sense of urgency", as John Kotter promoted in his "Leading Change" and "A Sense of Urgency" books.   All leaders "must describe an opportunity (or cause) that will appeal to individuals’ heads and hearts and use this statement to raise a large, urgent army of volunteers".   The creative and coherent sinew of these four items is collaboration, which David and many everyday leaders promoted through open doors, open brainstorming, risk mitigation versus risk avoidance, and the constant search for good ideas.   Most change agents will find this short article very familiar, if not, you may not be a change agent yet.

Why the only future worth building includes everyone

Why the only future worth building includes everyone | Everyday Leadership | Scoop.it
A single individual is enough for hope to exist, and that individual can be you, says His Holiness Pope Francis in this searing TED Talk delivered directly from Vatican City. In a hopeful message to people of all faiths, to those who have power as well as those who don't, the spiritual leader provides illuminating commentary on the world as we currently find it and calls for equality, solidarity and tenderness to prevail. "Let us help each other, all together, to remember that the 'other' is not a statistic, or a number," he says. "We all need each other."

Scholarship@Western - The Western Conference on Science Education: Western's Integrated Science Program: A response to complex global problems

Western’s new Integrated Science degree emphasizes connections among scientific disciplines and encourages undergraduate students to use an interdisciplinary approach to address real-world problems. The program is a four-year honors program that combines the focused coursework of a traditional honors degree with a unique set of courses in Integrated Science. Through novel classroom, tutorial and laboratory experiences, students refine their critical thinking and problem-solving skills while at the same time strengthening teamwork, leadership abilities and community engagement. In our presentation, we will discuss strategies that proved effective in integrating concepts from astronomy, biology, calculus, chemistry, computer science, earth science, mathematics, physics, and statistics together. Our presentation will also address how we overcame challenges relating to developing a new program. In addition, we will explore how we measured student engagement, and solicited and incorporated feedback.
Joe Boutte's insight:

A complex world requires leaders who understand the complexity and have a spectrum of approaches and solutions.  The addition of leadership, critical thinking, and integrated science makes Western's program a great incubator of everyday leaders.
