The only way to avoid these missteps is to place a lot of emphasis on how the need for a solution is communicated up front. In open calls for innovation, we need to clearly communicate to others the real problem to be solved and the benefits the solution must deliver, as well as our own understanding of the chief stumbling blocks and the features a solution will offer.

Your success really begins with an understanding of the difference between “I Can’t” and “I Won’t.” The next step, for many people is to find the right words to reframe their initiative to act. A great coach of mine (also a teacher) would say, "Don't say I Can't, say I'll try." Not everyone can get to "I Will" immediately, but I'll Try can put them on the path of proactiveness quite quickly.

How does one adopt an innovation leadership mindset? First, start with a point of view, not a decision mindset. Second, adopt an "and" mindset as you go about making decisions (because you have to)! Choosing one direction means saying no to another. By adding the word and to the mix broadens your ability to be inclusive about the direction to which you were saying "no."
