BioCarbon Engineering: Industrial-scale reforestation

BioCarbon Engineering: Industrial-scale reforestation | Friday: Think About It. | Scoop.it
Biocarbon Engineering is going to counter industrial scale deforestation using industrial scale reforestation. Destruction of global forests from lumber, mining, agriculture, and urban expansion destroys 26 billion trees each year.
Norma R. Burnson's insight:

Sustainable Food for the Globe.  Reforestation.   Playing catch up. Is the gap actually becoming shorter?  ..."Our solution balances these two methods. First, by planting germinated seeds using precision agriculture techniques, we increase uptake rates. Second, our scalable, automated technology significantly reduces the manpower requirements and costs. Finally, our mapping UAVs will also provide invaluable intelligence on planting patterns, landscape design and appropriate timing."  +++++

Feed your garden with fall leaves - Christian Science Monitor

Feed your garden with fall leaves - Christian Science Monitor | Friday: Think About It. | Scoop.it
Shredded leaves layered into a bed makes for rich spring soil.
Norma R. Burnson's insight:

Sustainable Food for the Globe.  Feeding Nature!  ..."Leaves are one of the best ingredients for healthy vegetable garden soil. They contain all three major plant nutrients (nitrogen, potassium, phosphorus), plus mineral micronutrients that plants need. These nutrients and micronutrients become available to plants through decomposition by soil microbes. Earthworms pull leaf pieces down from the surface, eating them as they tunnel through soil. The worms aerate and fertilize the soil with their castings (poop), making nutrients available to smaller soil critters and microbes, including the beneficial bacteria and fungi that play a major role in the decomposition and growth processes." +++++

Norma R. Burnson's insight:

Sustainable Food for the Globe.  Happy Monday!. Time to make the

suet!  ..."Most of us nowadays are well aware of the need to feed birds, especially – but not exclusively – in winter. Provide both nut and seed feeders, and if you are plagued by grey squirrels, choose those with a sturdy outer cylinder which is wide enough to allow through the birds but strong enough to deter the rodents. Fresh water is vital, too, and often overlooked. Clean both bird baths and nut and seed feeders every couple of weeks by scrubbing them clean. This avoids infections that have had a disastrous effect on the greenfinch population."   +++++
