Aligning strategy with culture

Aligning strategy with culture | Evaluation, Recrutement, Sélection | Scoop.it

Whether the strategic focus is to respond swiftly to customer needs or to achieve manufacturing excellence, organisational culture is an important enabler in achieving business success. There is little consensus, however, on what culture actually means. In our view, culture is what beliefs and values people share. It is the glue which holds people together and determines how they respond or behave. Culture serves as a source of competitive advantage because of this perspective.

You have to understand the importance of culture to gain competitive advantages, and you must align the culture with your strategy. And, you must have in mind that the culture is not tangible, except for the artifacts which are results of the influence of all key elements (e.g. strategy, people, processes, sturcture and rewards) of an organization and its environment.

By making changes in the key elements you can influence changes in the culture. But first I recommend you to understand what culture you have and want culture you want. With help by models describing different cultures you can get support and inspiration when analyzing the current culture and defining a new culture vision. Spiral Dynamics is an interesting and dynamic model of human development and development of social network, society or company.

Keep also in mind that

1. Organizational culture is optimized only when the key elements are aligned and cooperate to influence to desired behaviour of its members

2. Influencing a culture is a process that takes time and makes demand on distinct and consistent leadership

When people in an organisation have different interpretations of what really matters to customers, the customer experience falls apart. The difficulty is to align business units and individuals to do the right things – and do them consistently.
