The European Parliament's international trade committee has rejected a proposal by David Martin, an MEP who is drafting the Parliament's position on ACTA. Martin wanted to ask the European Court of Justice for its opinion on the controversial anti-piracy treaty, but the committee decided yesterday that wasn’t needed and will now vote in June on whether to approve ACTA.

A group representing composers and songwriters is alleging that some of Europe's most prominent broadcasters are coercing them into giving up the copyrights to their work, sharply diminishing their earnings.

The European Composer and Songwriter Alliance, representing 12,000 composers and songwriters, filed <<a complaint with the European Commission>>, the EU's executive branch, targeting more than 15 broadcasters and studios, including the BBC, British Sky Broadcasting and ITV.

The complaint targets companies in the Netherlands, France, Italy, the U.K., Denmark and Austria..."

As Sony finally notifies its deal to acquire EMI music publishing, IMPALA confirmed its opposition, warning that the deal would give Sony excessive power and should be blocked.

The concerns raised by the European Commission the last time it looked at music publishing concentration centered around the ability of large publishers to control prices and other terms, even in negotiations with much bigger players such as iTunes.
