Whether it be political, budgetary, or based on financial solidarity, the idea of a more integrated EU is in fashion. But just what final form would the Federal Union take in the end? Nobody really knows, and that’s the whole problem.

With what will likely be the automatic appointment of the next European Commission President, the result of May 2014 European elections should endow the Brussels executive with greater legitimacy. But is this desirable, wonders a Swedish columnist. Via Stefan de Vries Delete the scoop?

Brendan Simms (univ of Cambridge) on The Guardian's website : "History suggests that the current crisis requires the immediate creation of an Anglo-American style fiscal and military union of the eurozone – a "democratic union". This would involve the creation of a European parliament with legislative powers; a one-off federalising of all state debt through the issue of union bonds to be backed by the entire tax revenue of the common currency zone (with a debt ceiling for member states thereafter); the supervised dissolution of insolvent private-sector financial institutions; and a single European army, with a monopoly on external force projection." One of the best column I've read so far on the idea of an European Federation from a historical perspective... by a British, on a British newspaper.
For my French compatriots : By "Anglo-american style", he doesn't mean "anglo-saxon" but a federative system inspired by the Union of England and Scotland on the one hand, USA on the other ;-)
The description of the pre-federal USA and its similarities with Europe's current situation are simply jaw-dropping. Delete the scoop?
