John Slifko's insight:

This is going to be an extraordinary event pullling researchers together from Europe,  and across the world, and involve mulltiple disciplines.  The topic is the Spanish-Portugues and American History of Freemasonry: From Aboslutism to democracy (1815-2015).  It is essential in the Anglophone world to consider how these papers are translated into English, and papers from the preceding 13 international gatherings since 1983!   That task could be undertaken by the Roosevelt Center or in participation with others with a similar multilingual focus.   Note: "America" here means the Western Hemisphere.

Participatory Democracy in Figaro, Spain | New Compass

The small town Figaro in Catalonia, Spain, is governed by an assembly of neighbours that does not belong to any political party. For ten years they have been in the Town Hall practicing a participatory democracy with a genuine desire to involve the rest of the people. One of its pillars is a participatory budgeting process where every resident can participate and decide how to spend the municipal budget.

Via jean lievens
John Slifko's insight:

The study of democratic civil society and its struggles and landscape in Spain is an important topic just as it is in countries around the world incuding America, Tunisia, Brazil, and France.  We have entered an era in the long history of maturing democratic civil society, in theory and praxis, where local and global comparative work becomes increaingly relevant.  It is the 18th century international republic of lettes with a difference.

John Slifko's insight:

Democracy, or democratic civil society, is never a completed work. It is a work that is always maturing, learning or dying.  Democratic civil society is contingent: it can succeed or fail, just like Masonic institutions can succeed or fail. in nations, states, cities and regions of the world   There is no certain road on the path to learning or related democracy and civic habitus.  The Euro American Masonic Open Forum is a venue for discussion of Freemasonry around the world, but also civil society (and civil societies) across the globe.  "Education, Justice and Democracy" is an important book engaging democracy and education and readers of the Euro American Masonic Open Forum may want to contemplate purchasing the book.  It is an impressive work relevant not only to democratic studies but also studies in Freemasonry. .

Temas de actualidad e interés para los masones liberales del ámbito ibérico
John Slifko's insight:

This blog site is an important resource on civic Freemasonry on the Iberian Peninsula.  An important question remains: what is the health of democratic civil society, and Freemasonry as representative of wider civil society, in Spain and its regions? The question is relevant even decades after the horrors of the Franco dictatorship.  The same question is relevant around the world concerning the possibilitites of a maturing civil society democracy, post-dictator. Democracy is always a work in progress, always a struggle. Democracy if it can be found for a moment is aspirational and agonistic.
