Melissa Marshall's curator insight, April 9, 7:23 PM

This is a fantastic resource for seeing how words have changed according to geography. Type a word into the box and see it translated directly on to a map in more than 30 languages. Great for teaching kids about regions of language, or asking how they think a certain country came to use a certain word.

John Slifko's insight:

There are books waiting to be written on this topic no less other dimensions of African American Freemasonry across time and a variety of places.  The breadth moves from the American War of Independence, to struggles for upward social mobility in Philadelphia in early America, to the underground railroad, labor movement, and no less the Harlem Renaissance.

Vídeo: 210 años de masonería cubana | Euro-American Masonic Open Forum | Scoop.it
John Slifko's insight:

Freemasonry has played a far more extensive role in Cuban culture than is commonly realized.  This video is only one small part of the story.  The Euro-American Masonic Open Forum will give periodic coverage to the history and current events of Freemasonry in Cuba. Watch this space.

John Slifko's insight:

Democracy, or democratic civil society, is never a completed work. It is a work that is always maturing, learning or dying.  Democratic civil society is contingent: it can succeed or fail, just like Masonic institutions can succeed or fail. in nations, states, cities and regions of the world   There is no certain road on the path to learning or related democracy and civic habitus.  The Euro American Masonic Open Forum is a venue for discussion of Freemasonry around the world, but also civil society (and civil societies) across the globe.  "Education, Justice and Democracy" is an important book engaging democracy and education and readers of the Euro American Masonic Open Forum may want to contemplate purchasing the book.  It is an impressive work relevant not only to democratic studies but also studies in Freemasonry. .

The Hedge Mason: The Circle of Philadelphes in Saint Domingue

The Hedge Mason: The Circle of Philadelphes in Saint Domingue | Euro-American Masonic Open Forum | Scoop.it
John Slifko's insight:

The Hedge Mason continues its rapid rise to being one of the best blog sites covering Freemasonry, and related topics, in the English speaking world. Here the topic is an early civil society in Haiti which drew upon the ideals of Freemasonry and likely even some of its symbols and process.  Remember that Freemasonry in the eighteenth-century was highly repesentative of wider, maturing democratic civil society.  Many mirrored Freemasonry while not being directly Masonic.  Much more needs to be learned about this general topic area in diverse geographies,  and is being learned and taught at universities like Bordeaux, UCLA and Zaragoza.  And of course, Freemasonry was different things to different people.  The Fraternity could also represent imperialism and colonialism at its best and worst.

John Slifko's insight:

This blog site is an important resource on civic Freemasonry on the Iberian Peninsula.  An important question remains: what is the health of democratic civil society, and Freemasonry as representative of wider civil society, in Spain and its regions? The question is relevant even decades after the horrors of the Franco dictatorship.  The same question is relevant around the world concerning the possibilitites of a maturing civil society or maturing democracy, post-dictator. Democracy is always a work in progress, always a struggle. Democracy if it can be found for a moment is aspirational and agonistic.
