Why 'natural' beekeeping could save our honey-making friends - Telegraph

Why 'natural' beekeeping could save our honey-making friends - Telegraph | Eugenics | Scoop.it

The honeybee is becoming an endangered species, with the finger of blame pointing in multiple directions. Wild honeybees are nearly extinct in the UK and from 1985-2005 there was a 53 per cent decline in managed honeybee colony numbers. Parasites and disease, climate change and air pollution all have an impact on bee health, but perhaps the most serious of all is the impact of pesticides.

Heidi Herrmann is one of a growing throng of natural beekeepers. She is trustee and co-founder of the Natural Beekeeping Trust, and has been keeping bees for years. Instead of following traditional practice, this movement challenges long-standing methods and processes. Like other members, Heidi has adapted her bee care to suit the bees rather than her own needs.

Woman with limited mental capacity can have her baby

Woman with limited mental capacity can have her baby | Eugenics | Scoop.it
A pregnant woman with significant mental health impairments will not have to undergo an abortion after a senior judge ruled that she had enough capacity to decide whether she wanted to become a mother.

The young woman, who is 18 weeks pregnant and cannot be named for legal reasons, was described in court as being in the “bottom one percent of the UK population” in terms of her cognitive abilities. Born with the genetic blood disorder sickle cell disease, she suffered from multiple strokes as a child that left her mentally impaired. She later won significant damages from a hospital in a medical negligence case and two deputies – her mother and a senior solicitor – were appointed by the Court of Protection to look after her “best interests” in the wake of the litigation.

The court was asked to decide whether the woman should go ahead with the pregnancy after the solicitor who acts as one of her deputies expressed concern that she might not have the required mental skills to decide whether she should give birth or seek an abortion when it emerged in November that she had fallen pregnant.

The views of her treating clinicians and independent psychiatrist Dr Stephen Tyrer were sought and all professionals agreed that she had the capacity to decide what she wanted to do with the pregnancy. The court also heard that she was supported by a loving family who looked after her and wanted her to press ahead with the pregnancy.

Mr Justice Hedley, sitting in the Court of Protection at London’s High Court, ruled that while the woman “manifestly lacked capacity” to participate in legal proceedings, she nonetheless did have the ability to “decide whether or not to continue with, or terminate, pregnancy”.

Global Report on Trafficking in Persons

Global Report on Trafficking in Persons | Eugenics | Scoop.it

Based on data gathered from 155 countries, it offers the first global assessment of the scope of human trafficking and what is being done to fight it. It includes: an overview of trafficking patterns; legal steps taken in response; and country-specific information on reported cases of trafficking in persons, victims, and prosecutions.

At the launch of the Report in New York, the Executive Director of UNODC, Antonio Maria Costa said that "many governments are still in denial. There is even neglect when it comes to either reporting on, or prosecuting cases of human trafficking". He pointed to the fact that while the number of convictions for human trafficking is increasing, two out of every five countries covered by the UNODC Report had not recorded a single conviction.

According to the Report, the most common form of human trafficking (79%) is sexual exploitation. The victims of sexual exploitation are predominantly women and girls. Surprisingly, in 30% of the countries which provided information on the gender of traffickers, women make up the largest proportion of traffickers. In some parts of the world, women trafficking women is the norm.

The second most common form of human trafficking is forced labour (18%), although this may be a misrepresentation because forced labour is less frequently detected and reported than trafficking for sexual exploitation.

Cotton slavery

Cotton slavery | Eugenics | Scoop.it

It is difficult to know for certain that the clothes you wear are not tainted by slavery (Lucy Mangan: how many slaves work for you?, 5 January). Most of the cotton exported from Uzbekistan, mentioned in the article, ends up in Europe and we – often unknowingly – are complicit in forced labour simply by buying a T-shirt. Exceptionally, the practice of state-sponsored forced labour in Uzbekistan means that we are calling on retailers to avoid the use of Uzbek cotton. However, in the majority of situations we would strongly urge consumers not to boycott certain goods or brands as it can hurt those in slavery-like conditions. Instead, consumers can play an important role in ending modern-day slavery by putting pressure on governments to make sure laws are in place and enforced to protect vulnerable people, and on business to make sure forced labour is not present in their supply chains.

Learning from the experience – not least from ending the transatlantic slave trade – we at Anti-Slavery International believe in the power of public pressure. www.antislavery.org/cottoncrimes.
