The New Middle Class and the Politics of Schooling in Latin America

The New Middle Class and the Politics of Schooling in Latin America | Development studies and int'l cooperation | Scoop.it

Over the last decade, Latin America has seen solid economic growth combined with decreasing (but still very high) income inequality – lifting millions of people out of poverty and fueling the rise of a not-poor-but-not-rich “middle” class.

That’s a good thing. But in Chile, the most “middle class” of all countries in Latin America by population and income share, thousands of young people have been taking to the streets to protest the low quality and high cost of schooling there.

How to use field experience to come as a sort of self-reflective practice of auto-evaluation and awareness-raising?

A few days ago I received a message from a recent graduate from a well-known development studies programme who I should call 'Julian'. He is about to travel to DRC for his first experience in an African developing country. And he wonders about his potential engagement - especially with his recently acquired critical knowledge of 'reflective aid work' in the back of his mind.

TED Talk: The danger of a single story

TED Talk: The danger of a single story | Development studies and int'l cooperation | Scoop.it
http://www.ted.com Our lives, our cultures, are composed of many overlapping stories. Novelist Chimamanda Adichie tells the story of how she found her authen...

To gain a global perspective inherently requires understanding multiple perspectives.  Africa is frequently portrayed as 'the other' but also homogenized within a single narrative that 'flattens' truth.  How do we teach about other places that develop geographic empathy and show the many stories of places?

Harnessing religion to improve education in Africa

Harnessing religion to improve education in Africa | Development studies and int'l cooperation | Scoop.it

‘Religion and education reform in Africa: harnessing religious values to developmental ends’, a fascinating new APPP paper by Leonardo A. Villalón and Mahaman Tidjani-Alou, examines recent educational reforms in Mali, Niger and Senegal, three overwhelmingly Muslim, francophone countries in West Africa. All three have tried to ‘harness the strength of popular religiosity’ in different ways ‘to make schools more attractive to parents by incorporating elements into schooling that reflect Muslim values and expectations and ensure training for future employment.’

Pass the Books. Hold the Oil.

Pass the Books. Hold the Oil. | Development studies and int'l cooperation | Scoop.it
Education is a better economic driver than a country’s natural resources.

This NY Times article is compelling fodder for a discussion on economic development.  While having natural resources on the surface sounds like the best valuable asset for a nation economy, why does Friedman argue that an abundance of natural resource can hurt the national economy?  While an educated workforce is obviously an asset, just how important is it compared to other factors?
