Japan is committed to providing Vietnam with Official Development Assistance (ODA) to help develop infrastructure and cope with climate change.

 

This was confirmed by Japanese Foreign Minister Koichiro Gemba while receiving Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc in Tokyo on July 2.

The United Nations Development Program is getting ready to normalize aid to Myanmar this month under an initiative being taken by Japan, diplomatic sources at the world body said Friday.Since the United States and the European Union have decided to ease sanctions on Myanmar as it moves toward democratization, competition is growing from other countries eager to tap its natural resources with the help of development aid.

The metals are needed for making an array of sophisticated products, from smartphones to smart bombs, as well as wind turbines and other green technologies. China is the source of more than 90 percent of the world’s processed rare earth metals.

 

Even if the West and Japan overcome the stiff challenges of winning their case at the World Trade Organization, it could still take several years before Beijing changes its policies — by which time companies in the West and Japan could have moved even more of their factories that use rare earth metals to China.

Japan to resume full-fledged development aid to Myanmar

Japan plans to resume full-blown development aid to Myanmar to help finance its infrastructure projects as the Southeast Asian country takes steps towards democracy, Foreign Minister Koichiro Gemba said on Tuesday.

 

Myanmar’s cabinet, led by President Thein Sein, has embarked on a wave of reforms since taking office last March, such as the release of more than 600 political prisoners, an easing of media censorship and laws allowing protests and trade unions.

Il y a un mois, soupçonnant Téhéran de vouloir se doter de l’arme nucléaire, les États-Unis et l’Union européenne int instauré un embargo sur le pétrole iranien et ils ont appelé tous les États à faire de même, ou à réduire à tout le moins leurs importations.

 

Le Japon, bien que 9 à 10% de ses importations pétrolières proviennent d’Iran, a suivi son allié américain. Pour compenser, le Premier ministre Yoshihiko Noda a annoncé que son pays devrait accorder des capitaux à un ancien ennemi de Washington en échange de son pétrole, l’Irak.
