China Gets Stake in Portugal's EDP

China Gets Stake in Portugal's EDP | Development studies and int'l cooperation | Scoop.it

China's Three Gorges won the bidding for the Portugal government's 21% interest in EDP-Energias de Portugal SA with an offer of $3.5 billion in the first of a series of sales of state-owned assets under the country's austerity program.

The deal marks the first time a mainland Chinese firm acquired a significant stake in a southern European company and may portend other such moves as cash-strapped European governments from Madrid to Athens have been clamoring for Chinese funding to help them finance gaping budget deficits.

To gain a global perspective inherently requires understanding multiple perspectives.  Africa is frequently portrayed as 'the other' but also homogenized within a single narrative that 'flattens' truth.  How do we teach about other places that develop geographic empathy and show the many stories of places?

The open data revolution comes to aid

The open data revolution comes to aid | Development studies and int'l cooperation | Scoop.it

The challenge is to provide information to people at country level. Our existing aid information systems are mainly designed to enable donors to share information with each other, not to meet the needs of people in developing countries.

But the information needs at country level are hugely diverse, both between and within developing countries. Here’s the technical bit: the way to serve all these different needs for information without massive duplication and bureaucracy is to separate the data from the interface.....

Towards A Radical New Approach To Development Aid

Towards A Radical New Approach To Development Aid | Development studies and int'l cooperation | Scoop.it

Development aid is in need of a major overhaul. This must include a better assessment of the priorities in specific developing countries: governance reforms designed to achieve a fairer distribution of income or economic reforms to increase growth. This is one of the important research conclusions reached by Rutger van den Noort, who will be awarded a PhD for his work on this subject on Thursday, 22 December at Delft University of Technology (TU Delft, the Netherlands)...

Chili. Quand le néolibéralisme triomphant se fissure

Chili. Quand le néolibéralisme triomphant se fissure | Development studies and int'l cooperation | Scoop.it

Turkey Slams France Over Genocide Bill

Turkey Slams France Over Genocide Bill | Development studies and int'l cooperation | Scoop.it

Turkey recalled its ambassador in Paris for consultations and announced sanctions against France after the so-called genocide bill, which criminalizes the denial of the Armenian genocide in 1915, was passed by the lower house of Parliament.

The bill has exacerbated an already frosty relationship between Paris and Ankara, in large part due to Mr. Sarkozy's vocal opposition to Turkey's bid to join the European Union.

| Rumor | Development studies and int'l cooperation | Scoop.it

India’s Boom Creates Openings for Untouchables

India’s Boom Creates Openings for Untouchables | Development studies and int'l cooperation | Scoop.it
India’s era of economic growth has created something unthinkable a generation ago: business opportunities for members of India’s untouchable caste, the Dalits.

Critics of globalization often site that globalization has changed indigenous cultures around the world and mourn the 'impurities' in these societies.  Is all cultural change a bad thing?  This article shows one way that global capitalism has been helping (some of) the poorest of the poor within India.  How is globalization connected to cultural changes within any given society?  How is capitalism changing a formerly 'immobile' social structure?
