India-EU FTA: Where Is Europe's Trade Agenda Headed? | Development studies and int'l cooperation | Scoop.it

Since 2007, India and EU have been negotiating a free trade pact, officially known as Bilateral Trade and Investment Agreement (BTIA). Notwithstanding several rounds of negotiations, the finalisation of BTIA has been delayed as differences cropped up between India and the EU over certain issues.

The EU is seeking greater commitments on services and investment liberalisation in addition to all the elements included in the revised offer by India under the Doha Development Agenda (DDA) of the World Trade Organization (WTO)....

Foreign aid cash spent tackling climate change

Foreign aid cash spent tackling climate change | Development studies and int'l cooperation | Scoop.it

In the past four years Dfid has spent £900 million on climate change projects with nearly two thirds of that being spent in the past financial year under the Coalition. A further £533 million has already been committed up to 2013.

The biggest recipients of the climate change aid are India and Indonesia, two countries considered to be rapidly emerging economies.

The disclosures – made under the Freedom of Information Act – will raise fresh questions over how foreign aid is spent, and comes after an Indian minister described British aid to the country as "peanuts", which ministers in London had begged Delhi to continue accepting.

Mumbai Elections: How India’s Regional Politics Affect the Country’s Future | Development studies and int'l cooperation | Scoop.it

Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu and Gujarat are as different as New York, Texas or California. In fact, since each state has its own official language, the better comparisons may be with England, France and Germany. Cameron pressed to rethink aid after India snubs

Cameron pressed to rethink aid after India snubs | Development studies and int'l cooperation | Scoop.it

Prime Minister David Cameron is facing growing calls to cut huge aid handouts to India after a series of perceived snubs.

Britain was stunned this month when New Delhi announced a big contract to buy French warplanes instead of the UK-backed Eurofighter Typhoon, despite intense efforts by the British government to boost trade.

Angry lawmakers then stepped up pressure on Cameron to axe the more than £1-billion aid budget for India after reports that the Indian finance minister described the handouts as "a peanut".

Insufficient water supply hits city's bio-diversity park

GURGAON: The bio-diversity park in the Aravali forest may be home to millions of trees but the ambitious project is facing an acute shortage of water and most planted trees have wilted.

The organisations working in the bio-diversity park claim that the tubewells in the area are insufficient to fulfill the water demand of the thousands of trees planted in the forest. Madan Mohan, president of an NGO which recently planted more than 5,000 trees in the park told TOI that the problems would be aggravated in the coming summers as the water shortage problem is set to get more acute.

India Ink: In Indian Politics, Crime Pays | Development studies and int'l cooperation | Scoop.it

At least 10 state assembly candidates in the northern state of Uttar Pradesh are presently in jail awaiting trial on charges that include murder and racketeering. In the current assembly, 139 out of 404 legislators are free while facing criminal charges.

Criminals and strongmen have long been a feature of Indian politics. Their ill-gotten wealth provides easy campaign cash, and they often control constituencies with strong caste or religious loyalties. Indian police are kept under tight political control, and are prevented from taking on politically-connected gangsters. Indian cops have been known to file false cases against opponents of the ruling dispensation. The courts move slowly against those who are charged....

India should refuse UK development aid

India recently decided to declare the French Rafale as preferred bidder in its long-running order for 126 multi-role fighter jets. In doing so, the Rafale has trumped the only other fighter in the race – the Eurofighter Typhoon.

One would think that this decision would be received in the UK (one of four partnership in the Eurofighter consortium) with some reflection on why the bid lost out? Rather, it is leading to some fairly childish complaints emerging from the once great colonial power that suggest the UK hasn’t entirely gotten used to its new place in the world.
