Chinese development aid in Africa

Chinese development aid in Africa | Development studies and int'l cooperation | Scoop.it

Chinese development finance in Africa is unusual in that much of the financial flows from China do not constitute official development aid (ODA).

Instead, much of it comes in the form of export credits and strategic lines of credit to Chinese-related companies, among other mechanisms. In this sense, it is very similar to Japanese financial flows to China several decades ago...

Rethinking support for adaptive capacity to climate change: the role of development interventions

Rethinking support for adaptive capacity to climate change: the role of development interventions | Development studies and int'l cooperation | Scoop.it

This report examines the role of development interventions in Mozambique, Uganda and Ethiopia in relation to supporting local adaptive capacity to climate change.

The impacts of climate change will not be the same for all. Vulnerability to the impacts of climate change often comes from vulnerability in a general sense – from poverty and marginalisation

Supporting local adaptive capacity cannot therefore be seen in isolation as ‘climate change programming’. It is an intrinsic part of all development interventions.

To gain a global perspective inherently requires understanding multiple perspectives.  Africa is frequently portrayed as 'the other' but also homogenized within a single narrative that 'flattens' truth.  How do we teach about other places that develop geographic empathy and show the many stories of places?

How women farmers in South Africa are adapting to climate change to feed their families

As a result of climate change and its impact on food production, small-scale women farmers in the Western Cape of South Africa are now eating less or nothing at all, and saving the little food they do produce for their families to eat. Despite their willingness to adapt, these women lack support to access markets, land and resources, owing to myths that small scale farming is for subsistence only.

Selling condoms in the Congo

Selling condoms in the Congo | Development studies and int'l cooperation | Scoop.it
TED Talks HIV is a serious problem in the DR Congo, and aid agencies have flooded the country with free and cheap condoms. But few people are using them. Why?

This video highlights why some well-intending NGOs with excellent plans for the developing world don't have the impact they are hoping for. Cultural barriers to diffusion abound and finding a way to make your idea resonate with your target audience takes some preparation. This also addresses some important demographic and health-related issues, so the clip could be used in a variety of places within the curriculum. FYI: this clip briefly shows some steamy condom ads.

Crissy Borton's curator insight, December 11, 2012 9:45 PM

Marketing is not something I would have thought about when trying to get people in the Kongo to use condoms. Her research into the brands they use and why may save many lives.

Nick Flanagan's curator insight, December 12, 2012 8:27 PM

I was surprised actually that it took this long for someone to think of this, given the fact that the AIDS crisis in Africa is practically a pandemic. However it is a good idea that someone had finally started to do something about it.

Kaitlin Young's curator insight, November 13, 2014 5:37 PM

This video explains the errors that a lot of NGOs make when attempting to help the developing world. While the NGOs have done a service providing condoms in the DRC, they lack appropriate marketing and merchandising for the product itself. In a way, the organizations need to eliminate their egos in the situation and allow for the product to be marketed appropriately.

BEIJING - China is doing more to promote and develop its cotton-planting operation in four African countries, the Ministry of Commerce said on its website on Thursday.

Experts and analysts said the move will help to strengthen ties between China, Benin, Mali, Chad and Burkina Faso. It will also allow the cotton trade to take place under fairer conditions in accordance with the World Trade Organization's (WTO) framework.
According to the statement, China will provide seeds, machinery, fertilizer and other materials to help promote cotton planting in the African countries.
